We are considering renting a home in the FL Keys on canal/waterfront and taking our boat (21 SPX). It looks like there are plenty of things to do and see. Anyone have any experience in the area or doing similar? Looks like my wife has found a few houses on Marathon. We would probably be most interested in cruising to some sandbars, beaches, sightseeing and some reef snorkeling. Cost of renting a boat for a day appears to be more than what it would cost me to drag my boat down and back from SC.

I like Marathon and also Big Pine... Big Pine is a bit more sleepy. If you like evening entertainment then Islamorada. Key West is shopping, and lots of peeps.

A while back we towed our 24' down from Chicago and kept it un Key West for a week. Totally worth it.

Learn the area before you go. Lost of open water mixed with lots of skinny water. Wind direction and waves will play a big role in how much you can explore.

Enjoy, and share when you are back.

Well the house is booked, Marathon in 2019. Got a house at Key Colony Beach on a canal.
Boat already has GPS and have Bluechart G2 coastal maps which I've used going up and down intracoastal in SC.
Anything else I might need to maximize my time in the Keys? I'm planning on getting a Salt Away kit for my fresh water drive/engine. I also thought about getting a hook or pole for grabbing mooring buoy when going out to reefs.

Go to Sombrero reef off of Marathon, great snorkeling, easy 3 miles off of Marathon. Sombrero Beach is nice, too. Bring a picnic lunch/BBQ.

If you're interested pm me. Up until last year we use to spend 2 months at a time for several winters at KCB. We would tow our center console down from Ohio and spend as much time on the water as possible. Still have a number of friends that are either renters or year round residents. I can answer any boating questions you may have.

I am in Ft Myers for the winter and plan on trailering my 240 SD to the Keys this winter. Its 175 miles from Ft Myers to Key West. Trailering is easier.I think I will go to Islamorada and days trips from there. Let me know when you get there and maybe we can hook up and buddy boat.I always carry Salt away and my flushing kit. Buy the Salt away by the gallon on line much less expensive.Amazon $44.00 per gallon Safe Travels Cheers Joe

All that sounds fun. It may have been a typo, but a Sundancer is a DA not SD.
