Has anyone “fast passed” a sailboat?

On Labor day (a nice sunny day, but hardly any wind) we went from Baltimore down to St. Michaels.

Leisurely cruise running about 8-9 knots.

No less than 6 or 7 sailboats (sails dropped, under power) cut directly across our bow coming from port to starboard. Seems like there is a rule about this?

Also a couple of Sea Rays did the same thing - oblivious.

Sailboat under power is the same as a powerboat. No right of way or priority over other power boats. It seems they don’t know that sometimes.

In this discussion, whether it is a sail boat or a power boat and what the power source is doesn't matter. The vessel being over taken is the stand on vessel and has the right of way over the one doing the over-taking, which is the give-way vessel. He has the right of way, but that does not mean you cannot pass him.

But what do I know....I appraently don't know the difference between fast and slow!

So maybe I should’ve titled this thread “what’s the quickest and most effective method for overtaking a slower vessel?”

One thought about this thread is where this is occurring.

Not everyone runs on the icw or other narrow contained channels.

The lake, bay, or generally open water it changes the discussion. Still the same concerns about wake, but you have room to maneuver.

Gun it past the sailboat. Try not to insert your boat into the sailboat or land on top of sailboat. If that does happen, take photos.

We always do request a slow pass. The problem is as said above, most sailboats do not have VHFs on. or they don't understand a slow pass. The idea is for them to slow to idle and let us pass at a fast idle.

@bahamabreisus glad to see you back online.

What are conditions like there?

Getting better, power crews are everywhere as well as First Responders. All are doing amazing jobs, Grocery stores and gas stations out of everything including gas. Maybe a couple days to get restocked, all roads are flooded coming in.

My observations of almost 20 years boating on the Chesapeake...not a single one of my power boat friends turns on their VHF with the exception of opening day of Rockfish season to hear reports come in (mostly BS bragging it seems also.) I always turn mine on be it the previous sailboats I owned or the Searay I've had for just over a year (as soon as I board the boat.) They would never hear it anyhow-between the engines and the stereo.
