Hi,

I have a 2009 43 Sundancer. I have noticed not just a few but most of the wood cabinet faces are starting to delaminate or chip at the bottoms. These can be ones that are used rarely or all the time doesn't seem to matter. The boat is located in southern Florida so i get the heat and humidity issues but i always run the A/C at a minimal of 77 deg when i not using it and cooler when i am, not to mention that shouldn't be a issue anyway. Just curios if anyone else is experiencing this? I cant imagine i am the only one with this problem. If anyone is familiar with this and has any ideas they would be appreciated.

thanks,
TK

If they are like mine, they are not wood. They are a picture of wood covered by a sheet of clear laminate. I don't know how the laminate is affixed to the picture. On mine, the glue just started to release and got worse. I'm assuming age. I've heard you can fix it with a heat gun. I had to rebuild the cabinet due to a leaking port lite in the galley.

I agree they are just a laminate. The problem i have is not only is it releasing but they are actually chipping off the bottom.

Thanks,

TK, you most probably have a wood veneer which is bonded to a Phenolic backer. I have several areas where the veneer has lifted, mostly on the curved valances at the top. You can source the material through searay and have the panels re-laminated.

Restorationmarine.com for the fix. There are several posts on the topic here.

Enough said... :^)

LG111 thanks for the referral!! Unfortunately, we don't carry the finishes that Sea Ray used from 2004 to present. Prior to 2004, Sea Ray did their own cabinet construction and the "wood like" laminates were provided by Vitracore . With the downturn in early 2002, Vitracore went under and the manufacturing patents were returned to Nuvacor. Nuvacor continues to manufacturer the laminates used by Sea Ray for 1994 to 2003 and Restoration Marine sells them to marine contractors and boat owners worldwide.

Currently, the only source for laminates used on Sea Rays over the past 12 years is Sea Ray. We have tried several times to source that material but our best guess is that whoever is building their cabinets today, controls the laminate source. Ironically, while we have continued to provide our material to Sea Ray, Marine Max and others for 10 years....we can't seem to get our hands on the newer finishes. Hopefully, that will change at some point.

In regards to the repair. Chipping on the edges has been a problem with the newer finishes. The older finishes suffered from delamination whereby temperature/moisture/insufficient application of glue caused the glue to fail and the laminate to "separate". The cure was to strip off the old laminate and replace it. Chipping is some cases can be filled and color matched to improve the look.

Hey Guys,

Thank you for the insight. i bought the boat thru Marine Max so I am guessing that will be the best route to get to sea ray. Its unfortunate in this day and age to have something like this happening on a 7 year old boat.

Thanks again,
TK

It has been a few years since this post so I thought I would try to get an update. Have you been able to source the material to repair the newer Sea Ray Cabinets? I ask because I looked at a 2011 520 DB and there is some delamination on the edges of the Cabinets and I was wondering if it is repairable.

My Laminate which is a real wood veneer with a backing was sourced through Ultra Wood Products
http://www.ultrawood.com/
Searay Customer Service directed me to them and there was some going back and forth to get the correct color and finish. I bought (2) 4x8 Sheets of the material for repairs and the match was perfect. Try them.

Ultra wood is out of business. Do you have any material left you would like to sell?
