480 DB Owners Club

A couple questions for owners:
1. The green light on the power panel indicating power is on for shore or genny is out. Is there a bulb behind the lens, or is that a separate fixture?
2. Replacement rocker switches (single blue light up) for the dash. What brand?

FPMarine has the green power lights - $4....

Carling - I think I've gotten them from Blue Sea Systems...But FPMarine also has a bunch of them...

Hello All, need some help, posting for a buddy he has a 2000 48DB with 3196 Cats. There appears to be a VDO oil sensor on the Raw water pumps, one failed and sprayed oil in the engine compartment, the other giving off constant alarms at the helm. First raw water pump I've ever seen that's oil cooled. Can't seem to locate a part number or source anywhere, MarineMax no help either. Any help greatly appreciated, thanks.

Can anyone point me to where I can find rated RPM at 100% power for the CAT 3196s in the 480DB? At full throttle without engine sync mine are running port 2313rpm/100% and stbd 2327rpm/98% with 60% fuel and 100% water onboard. Thanks!

What product is everyone using to clean diesel soot off the transom? I waxed my boat last week except for the transom and wanting to super clean it before waxing. I have not found the magical cleaner yet.

Also......prayers for the boats in Florence way. I am in a Midwest lake and could not imagine the stress of saving my boat in a storm like this one.

Not sure but my 01 is running 2300 @ 35 mph full gear and half tanks

That’s interesting, mine does not have the sensor it’s a fitting that screws in straight from the top- not at a 90 degree and mine developed an oil leak at that fitting recently. I replaced it with the CAT made fitting and hose and it still leaks.

The best product to combat soot is to use Cummins QSM11's!

My bridge refrigerator stopped running. It is a Norcold DE-451 dual voltage fridge. The indicator light is not lit. Has anyone had to trouble shoot theirs? Advice? None of the breakers or fuses are labeled bridge refrigerator. Can anyone tell me which AC breaker feeds the fridge, which DC breaker feeds it, and where the DC fuse (if any) is located? Thanks!

I found the attached CAT 3196 engine data. I'm running a few rpm above rated speed of 2300 rpm at WOT. I took 1/2 inch of pitch out of my props 8 years ago because I was running below 2300 rpm at WOT. I haven't touched them since. I'm painting the bottom next month and considering tuning up the props. Should I put a bit of pitch back in? Also, I've been cruising at 80% power, which is about 1950 rpm or higher depending on conditions, but the attachment says maximum continuous cruise speed is 1900 rpm. Should I cruise at 1900 RPM vice 80%? Comments/advice please?

I wouldn't add pitch. I run my boat where the boat is "happy" which in my case (QSM11's) seem to be around 1800 to 1900 RPM; that's right around 22 to 26 knots and 72% to 76% load. Two months ago I had 75-100 RPM added to the engines when the props were off the boat; this ended up being about 1" of pitch and they took a bit of cup out. Now, on the pins the engines turn just shy of 2400 (rated at 2300); EGT's went dramatically down. In the end EGT's went down, load went down, and speed went up - go figure.

Tom - have you dealt with any exhaust manifold leaks? What are your EGT's after the prop tuning?
Yes Port engine cyl #3, slight soot hazing; hasn't been fixed yet but monitoring.
EGT's (instrumented by the mechanic) were 980F post turbo at 1800RPM and 15.4GPH. Hull was stripped and new hard anti-fowling put on but tanks were full. I don't have the boat instrumented for EGT's so this data is one off.

I run at 1950 burning 18-19 GPH with 60% load, EGT's are in the low 900's but I've never seen anything better than 23 knots at cruise. I'm probably in the 15 GPH range at 1800 but my EGT's climb quickly so I try not to stay there too long. Max RPM is about 2320.

I've got a pretty good leak on my Port engine that will be dealt with soon.

Here's what I found after spending a couple of hours on boatdiesel...

"The 3196 E rated engine is rated at 2300 RPM. Top engine limit is 2410 RPM. Engine should achieve 2310-2340 RPM when under way." So I think I'm good with the pitch I have now.

I found a nice use for the old tube tv space on my 99. Low profile Vitifrigo ice maker. Nice addition to the cabin.

My Buddy had a 48-01, he sold it, has a sunbrella cover the wraps the bridge windows and covers the entire bow. we never had it on the boat, so don't have a lot of details on it, if someone is interested we can spread it out and get some more details and pictures.
