this may have been discussed before...if so I missed that thread....

we have many boats (especially pontoons) on our lake that have very bright LED lighting on the outside of their boats....sometimes they are so bright it is difficult to see the standard red, green, and white navigational lights.....

my question is why is this LED lighting legal?.....I thought the whole reason for specific colors of visible navigation lights is to indicate the orientation and direction of a boat at night to all others that can see the boat....on boats that have LED lights all over the outside of the boat it is sometimes hard to tell the intended path of the boat....I guess this is the same concern about boats running with their front spotlights on which I believe is illegal....

anyone know how law enforcement is suppose to handle boats with bright LED exterior lighting and/or front spotlights burning?....

I wonder if someone retrofitted a bulb into an old fixture in your example with ?x watts of power over standard.

I find most of the time the opposite is true........ boats with very dim lights and it's frustrating.

I relamped my running lights with new incandescent bulbs when I bought the boat last year and after cleaning the lens they are nice and bright again.

actually I am referring more to boats that have long strings of the lights that sometimes run the length of their boat....many pontoons have these lights mounted on the edge of their deck right above th top of the pontoon and are the full length of the deck.....

I get it. But that is better than having no operable running lights.

I have always wondered about cruise ships? Those things are lit up like Times Square.

This light pollution has flooded into every where you look and it seems like any authority to regulate it has been blinded by the light (no pun intended)The same thing happens when police pull someone over on the highway and blind the on coming traffic.Common sense when it comes to lighting doesn't exist anymore .

Where I boat here on Lake St. Clair in Michigan. I have been told that it is illegal to be underway with any non-navigational (underwater, speaker, decorations) lights on. I don't know of anyone that has been ticketed for it though. I don't run with my underwater or speaker lights on anyway so I don't know if I would be stopped or not.
