hi guys, saw very little amount of what looked like black soot in engine compartment, ran motors everything seems fine. Stated genny ran for a minute or two saw no water flowing outside ,immediately shut it down. Day before ran for about 15 minutes, always check when I first start it but not sure how long it may have run with no water, ran fine and like I said started right up today, so besides impeller, which I hope is my only problem what else should I look for , it's a Koehler 5e. Thanks in advance for any help

Sea strainer or fowled at intake under boat. I found out(On this site) that there is no hull strainer on SeaRay because it will act like a scoop and force water into the engine. To clean the intake under the boat I disconnect the hose from the through hull and then connect it to the potable water and force any blockage out. Close sea valve first before disconnecting the hose to the strainer.

I’ve also got the 5e and had to replace the impeller last month. It ran with (assumably) no cooling water for about 15 minutes and then shut itself down. It’s literally the one time I didn’t go up and check to see if water was coming out of the side of the boat. Anyway I cleared the through hull and strainer first using my sea flush vac attachment and a wet/dry vac blowing in reverse. The air bubbles observed outside the boat told me the through hull was clear. Still no water, so replaced impeller and all good. The 5e does have an automatic high temp cut off, so you shouldn’t have to worry about over heating. Mine has performed flawlessly since.

You have to install strainers on your underwater genny intake and A/C intake around here and frequently check your strainer baskets.
“South Bay” strainers would be best.
If you don’t have them, then you should probably check your baskets every time you go out. Especially after a flood tide.
My boat was new to me last season and wasn’t from around here so it didn’t come with them on anything.
Knowing how bad it gets, I checked my strainer baskets every time I used the boat last year until it came out of the water and I was constantly pulling eel grass out of them.
I installed the “South Bay” strainers over the winter.
