Your token sailor... :)

just saying- do I have the only powerboat that gets tossed and turned when another powerboat passes me while I am slow cruising at 7 knots. Where do I file this complaint?

What's 7 knots? Does your boat go at 7 knots? ;)

Welcome to CSR. Many of us will welcome your perspective. I'm sure the sail community has many of the same issues as the power. Crazy, inexperienced, or pickled boaters run both style of boats.

We both have engines and with some of our larger boats our hulls act like sails. So you see, we are somewhat alike.

Welcome! Sorry to see how quickly this thread tacked south. I personally appreciate all boaters' perspectives. If something they say tweaks my delicate sensitivities, I just go boating. That seems to fix everything. well....that and bacon.

I am a boater - both sail and power. My signature mentions a 39' sail I owned. I have done 20 plus sail bareboat charters in the Caribbean. I presently own and race a Flying Scot. I own both types of propulsion. My first love is sailing but this weekend the family will be on a Sea Ray 330 DA with twin 350 Mags and I intend to combust a few old dinosaurs.

I do not like Canuck's imperious attitude. He is a troll looking for attention. This forum has lacked any spark the past few years so this is the result. Tit for tat with a troll. Too bad for us and where are the moderators.

I saw this bumper sticker for the first time the other day...it was on a suburban.. I thought it was hilarious...

it ain't bragging if you've done it.

I disagree. And before I went public with my dissent, I wanted to double check. So I looked up “brag”. The definition was to “say in a boastful manner”. What’s “boastful” mean? Here’s what I found: “showing excessive pride and self-satisfaction in one's achievements, possessions, or abilities”

Showing excessive pride *in one’s accomplishments*

So appears you CAN be bragging if you’ve done it. In fact, that’s precisely what bragging is. If you haven’t done it, you’re not bragging. You’re either fantasizing or fibbing.

I agree 1000%. Don't you guys have anything better to do than rehash this tired argument. I suspect that Canuck will change how he posts on here; telling the truth about his accomplishments but in a more humble way.

I believe I agreed, too. Read my post (just after his) before chastising me. Then, physician, heal thyself.

Ill take the risk and assume your question is genuine.

Before I had a chance to decide on my next move an amazing thing happened. The boat tipped and made a 160 degree course change that seemed to take place within its length. This had him heading across my bow and slightly towards me, but we were far enough apart that there was no problem.

My questions are:

1) How is that maneuver executed or even possible?

2) What observations could I have made to anticipate such an abrupt move?

I should add that we were many miles up the lake all by ourselves. This was not an avoidance maneuver.

When sailboats are cruising without a destination they frequently sail back and forth along a course because the wind direction makes that course convenient to get out and back in to their origin. As a result, they will frequently sail a distance, turn around, and sail back to where they came from. The sailor you encountered may just have been doing that.

Regarding the turn, to reverse course a sailboat will either turn the bow through the wind, (coming about) which is comparatively slow because they lose power when they turn into the wind, or turn the stern through the wind (jibing) which is a relatively fast, almost violent turn. The sail moves from one side of the boat to the other very quickly, but doesn't lose much wind power in the process. Also, sailboats pivot around their keel or centerboard, which can make a turn tighter.

It would be ideal if a boater looked behind them before they changed course, but I see every type of boat execute turns without looking.

How could you predict it: If you were close enough to hear them you might hear a warning to the crew like "prepare to come about " or "jibe ho". Otherwise, just look for everyone in the cockpit ducking so they don't get hit by the boom. If you see them ducking and/pr switching sides on the boat, the turn is imminent.

Did my questions seem risky or disingenuous?

Anyway thanks for the response and clarifications.

scooper, my comments were not specifically directed to anyone in particular, just to the snarky comments in the thread. If your thin skin was punctured by my comments then I guess an apology is due you.

Just a lot of snark on this thread - not from you - so I guess I was cautious. No offense intended.

None taken and you’re right about the snark.

The odd thing is that I put aside my disdain for Captain Nemo and asked him those questions directly because I was genuinely interested and...

I’m not hurt by your comments. Just pointing out a little hypocrisy. And well played. First one to call the other one thin skinned (or, butt hurt) wins, right? Lol

Holy crap people. Either give it a rest or take it over to THT. They love this sort of thing over there.

The token troll, I mean sailor, that started this thread and derailed the step-sister thread “please delete” has been AWOL (banned?) for a few days now. Hopefully both of these threads will die a necessary death and we can all get back to being civil Sea Ray brethren together...
