480 DB Owners Club

That's what threw me for a loop. The middle mark on my analog gauge is at 180 and they run around 165 so the needle sits about mid range.

Steve - I saw your post on Boatdiesel. Don't let Tomas scare you away with his ramblings. If you've read much on there you'll see that he's all over the map and doesn't make sense all the time.

Ha! Nice dialogue over there, isn't it? I'm still trying to figure out exactly who he is? Is he Tony's replacement? He definitely has opinions and isn't afraid to share them. His comment about "avoid the QSM except if the alternative is a boat with the 3196" was amusing. You hit the nail on the head with your response. If I end up in a 480, it's definitely going to be a Cat or a QSM. (Where's boltman to chime in with accolades for the MANS engines?). I've got a very good understanding of what's going on with the QSM's, but I don't have as detailed understanding of the "failure mode" in the Cat aftercoolers. There's surprisingly little details on why and how they fail, other than "bad design". If anyone has a link to something discussing HOW the Cat aftercoolers fail and how they take out the rest of the engine, that would be very much appreciated. I'm the sort that likes to know all of the facts about the HOW's and WHY's so that I can then decide which one seems like a better risk for me.

Scooper321, Boltman has sold his 480DB and has moved onto the world of RV. I had a chance meeting with him at a Dunkin Donuts coffee shop and I believe he said he is now part of the RV world.

Well, good for him. I don't know him, but based on my reading through this thread, I'm sure he's giving the RV world the same gusto he brought to boating!

Has anyone pulled the inspection hatch up on the bottom of the starboard salon storage cabinet under the window? -just forward of the power panel cabinet. What did you find and what’s it for? Thx

Are you going to keep it at Marinette?
Morning all. Transaction complete. Beautiful boat. Woody, it's in Sturgeon Bay for the remainder of the season and they are winterizing and storing for me as part of the package. Not sure about next year yet.

That's the access to the Starboard fuel tank sending unit.
Thank you, was hoping so but the second cover underneath the panel is really tight and didn’t want to have to break it to get it out without reason. Has anyone ever replaced the sending unit? If so with what and where did you find a replacement? Mine just started false reading this summer- full is showing 2/3, drives me crazy.

Question to all that run their generators often, do you lighten the load purposely or just run all the creature comforts constantly? Does it make sense to shut down the air occasionally to give it a break? Or even shut down the generator for a few hours? Or does running it with only fridge/freezer load cause issue? I’m out for a couple weeks and can’t help but feel uneasy about non stop running.

I have a 48 DA but my generator starts when I disconnect from the dock and does not shut off until I return. During the time away I never turn off anything and have never had a problem running all my electrical systems and devices.

SpikeDaddy,

“Aim High” and both of you will get there and luv your new toy, kind of reminds me of mine!

It should be clear by now to most people more generators fail from lack of use and worse yet is running with little load on them.

Our generator is the first thing to start and last engine to be turned off. The only no no on our boat relates to hair dryers, coffee pots and other high load appliances. You can run them all but you need to keep an eye on what load you’re pulling even when or exspecialy when on shore power. It’s called load Management and the wife or admiral should understand as well as any women on board with hair dryers !

The only thing I'll add regarding generator usage is that before shutting them off, reduce the load on them and let them idle for a few minutes before shutting them down.

I replaced both sending units this winter/spring. The reason I say winter and spring was because I had multiple failures using Livorsi Autocal sending units which caused me to tear apart the boat a few times. They eventually downgraded me to the SFW's which have been fine....so far.

You definitely want to keep the generator loaded up. I usually run my bridge air while anchored to help out with that.

Incidentally, the PO bought THE LAST 52 Sundancer made. The Sea Ray crew put THE LAST ONE hidden up in the anchor locker. Shipped the boat out early this month and were laid off. Sad.

Thanks! - Do you have a part number by chance?

The part # is SFW26. The 26 is the tank depth (which should actually be 27" for our boats) but I was leaving on a trip and they only had 26's in stock. I'd rather have an extra inch of fuel that I don't know about than the other way around!
