Thoughts on 1998 Carver 400 Express?

I think they are reasonably nice. However, my understanding is they are pigs -- slow and burn a lot of fuel. That's a lot of boat to push around even with 7.4s.

Lots of unattractive canvas, obsolete electronics and not as stylish as similar types of Sea Rays. Reminds me of the old days when we went tent camping, but with a nicer shower.

Carver owned Trojan at that point. That model was first called the 390. It was renamed 400 with only minor changes. Size-wize, it’s more comparable to 380 Sundancer.

It does fine with gas engines. In fact, I’ve never seen one with diesels.

No idea on boat but price seems high. Recent survey put our boat at 50K. You probably have room for negotiation. Out boat would do 22 knots before we loaded it up. Now it does 18 knots. It burns 55 GPH at full speed and 6 GPH at 6 knots at 9 knots around 10 to 12 GPH.

I’m in MN...boats are always priced high up here. I’m familiar with the 454s as I have them in my 330 Sundancer

I looked at the boat...it was “meh” at best. Fit and finish wasn’t up to par with Sea Ray. Dirty carpet, ripped seats, etc. and yes it was about the size of a 380 Sundancer...not a Sea Ray 400 Express Cruiser
