I believe I've read all of the other threads and looking for some more help. I have a 6.5 kw Quicksilver that was out of the boat when I purchased it. It has been diagnosed with a short. Engine runs but needs a tune up. There is a shop in town that "may" be able to rewire it and get it producing power. If this works I'll have about $1500 tied up in the shop time ($500) plus the cost for the electric motor company ($1000) to rebuild. But can't guarantee its even rebuildable until I spend some more money to have it broken down further.

Friend of a friend has a 4kw Quicksilver that he removed from same vintage boat when the timing gear broke. He yanked it and replaced with a used westerbeke. I can buy it for $650. Is it possible to put his generator head on my engine? If so, is it worth it? For our use, I think the 4kw will work, but I'd love to here your input.

I don't mind spending a few thousand to end up with a working generator. Is it possible to walk away from the quicksilver problems and swap to a different brand without dropping $7K-$10K when I account for the retrofit?

Thanks for your input.

If you are committed to keeping the boat for several years then I would do what your friend did. Putting money into Quicksilver that has been out of production since the early 90s and very difficult to get parts for not to mention they are unreliable is putting good $$ after bad. Besides you'll get most or all of it back in resale someday. BTW stay away from Kohler as well.

Flight systems inc. Will argue the point of being a bad generator. It has a Nissan engine They can rebuild the control board for the generator and adjust the voltage regulator. All other parts are available online and through an automotive parts place for the motor such as Rock Auto.

I have heard that the Nissan motor is pretty bulletproof. I will also have some spare parts. But don't want to be constantly making repairs.
Any trusted sources for buying used generators? I've seen Kismet mentioned.

We have an 8KW Quicksilver. Ony part we can not get is the heat exchanger. Rockauto can supply most part for the Nisan engine it is out of Micro car.
The electronics are from http://www.partsfortechs.com/asapcart/page.html?id=13 They are expensive. If you have to rewind the generator I have no idea as to cost.
I looked at replacing mine and it was 7 to 8 thousand. I assume it would be more after they figure out it is a lot of work to get out and build new mounting area and tie into exhaust. If you can have a shop evaluate the generator first you may find it only needs adjusting.

I have a Quicksilver QS7.5G generator that runs great. However, I have an issue with the Engine Control Circuit Board that keeps turning off the fuel pump. I assume that I will not be able to find a replacement for this, does anyone know of a possible replacement option or someone that may have pulled a QS generator lately?
