Hi all,

I've just purchased a 1997 Sea Ray 250 Sundancer after finally deciding that it was time to move up from our 185 sport and explore new waters. I bought it knowing I was going to have to do some work to the brakes as someone replaced an axle and never put the brakes back on. The actuator/hitch is still there but not sure if it still functions right. I was looking online at some full disc brake kits that come with everything including the lines and fittings. The thing I'm wondering about is the weight rating of the kit. The hitch on it now takes a 2-5/16" ball. Im assuming the axles are 3500lbs axles. One of the kits i looked at offered 10" discs with a 7000lb actuator that I think takes a 2" ball. I know the boat weighs 5300lbs dry then you need to factor in the trailer and gear and everything else.
Just wondering what other people are running for brakes and actuators for similar size boat?

I put electric brakes on my triple axle trailer and it they were excellent for the 3 years I ran it (until I sold the boat).
It was also nice having brakes in reverse on steep ramps.

If your plan is to be dipping the trailer in the ocean, for longevity, I would avoid electric brakes. SS hydraulic disc are the most reliable in that event. Surge actuators have their draw backs with backing up and down ramps as well. If not properly maintained they can also cause brakes to drag. If your budget allows, I would suggest looking at the electric/hydraulic set ups. Love my set up and it will easily brake my truck as well if need be.

I'm goimg to stick with surge brakes. I am a little concerned about backing down the ramp and that big boat dragging me down the ramp but I should be okay. It's just the actuator that has me confused. It looks like I'd need the 10 inch discs for my 3500lb axles but the actuators that come with those kits tend to be 6000lbs or 7000lbs which seems close to my limits with my boat.
