Sea Ray: The Acquisition that didn't Happen

I would love to see late 90s early 2000s Sundancer style again with larger hardtops and cockpit AC. Boating is about being outside, not sitting in a "living room". Now, I doo love me some 07 era 48 DAs

Nice boat. Downside is the weight. 22,000 lbs distributed out on a 48' long boat with 13' beam? Be ready to do some rockin' and rollin' out there...!

Well, my boat is 36', 18,000 pounds and 12.5' beam. Solid ride while underway with any speed, but it can rock and roll at anchor, at the dock, or at slow speeds. My experience with my boat therefore, doesn't support the idea of a worse ride on a 47.5', 13' beam, 22,000 pound Intrepid 47.5. All reports I've heard/read comment on the smooth ride in an incredible boat.

How is boating about being outside if you have cockpit AC?

I'm not being critical, but I've found over time I'd really like at least a helm that can be enclosed without a bunch of isinglass. I'd like a lot of open cockpit space, but I'd like at least half of it enclosable without a bunch of canvas, too.

You don't say where you are, but in NC in the summer months, some cold AC blowing on you sure feeels good. I think that's why I like the 07 era 48DA's, glass enclosed front, but wide open to the rear, that is able to be enclosed with canvas

Minnesota. In our actual warm months (we really have them), the open helm on my 310 is great and I like the "open". But when it rains suddenly, zipping in the isinglass is a pain. And not having the cockpit enclosed makes boating in cool weather not really very appealing to the admiral, which means we do less of it.

I find the coupe designs with at least the front half the cockpit enclosed really appealing for these reasons. I don't know that it's all that practical, but some kind of folding/accordian door setup to close up the cockpit would be really nice.

Sea Ray’s latest designs, the Euro look, was a big departure from their “bigger boats” boats that were such a huge success in the 80’s, 90,’s, early 2000’s, etc., and IMHO that’s what killed the big boat market for them.
From the 80’s through until the last boat before the ugly Euro design each style change was an evolution and improvement over the last and provided them a pretty loyal following in both new and used boat buyers. Used boat buyers are important too because very often the seller of one of the big Sea Rays is selling to get a new or bigger model.
They screwed the pooch when they abandoned that.
Their pricing got out of whack too.
As I’ve posted before: For me, Sea Ray was to boat’s what Buick is to GM cars. Not a Cadillac, but for a little less money you got a better than average product with the pricing reflecting that.
The pricing on the new bigger Sea Rays is more like Cadillac type pricing, but for a Buick, and an ugly one at that.

I love the 48DA but I'm not a fan of that windshield that goes to the hardtop. I have 2 friends with them and they roast in the Texas heat and they're very difficult to see out of at night.
