Hello All,

On my second season with my first boat. I love everything about it (except for putting gas in it). I'm really trying to learn as much as I can. Hoping that some of you more experienced boaters/searay owners can talk about some common mistakes, issues, do's/don'ts, etc... that I'll most likely run into?

Thanks :)

Rule # 1 around here....if you don't post pictures you don't actually own a boat. :)

You'll probably find a 280 dedicated thread somewhere in the Sport Cruiser section of the forum. Lots of info around here...

Welcome!

You don't say where you boat, or what kind of water. Is it a trailer boat? You should put that info in your signature so others can offer information intelligently. Here are a few items you need to do regardless of where you boat.

  • Keep a nice coat of wax on her at all times.
  • Do your maintenance on time. Plugs, wires, oil changes, impeller, belts, fuel/water separators.
  • Keep the cockpit covered when not in use.
  • Keep your canvas waterproofed.
  • Rinse the engine after it's used EVERY time.
  • Lube the out-drive periodically.
  • Check the water in your batteries.
  • Check your out drive oil periodically.
  • Check the engine for broken hose clamps.
Happy Boating!

Thanks for the input. I tried to update location and other info in the profile but there doesn't seem to be anymore options to add info than what is currently there. For example... you have a"location" in your profile details near your handle, I have no option for that? Maybe the admins changed the feature??

Either way, Boat in NJ. Mainly cruise around the barnegat bay with ocean trips occasionally. Did the fireworks in long branch on the fourth...that was a blast... coming home in the dark for the first time was a bit sketchy though..haha.

She's kept in a slip near the point pleasant canal. Easy access if we want to shoot down to cattus island or tices shoal, and also fairly easy to the ocean.

For these:

"Rinse the engine after it's used EVERY time." - is this done with just a hose?? I would have never thought of that..

"Check the water in your batteries." - How often is this recommended?

Again... thanks for the help!

My mistake, I was assuming you had it on a trailer because of the out-drive. You won't be able to flush the engines without a special flush kit installed.

Make sure you take good care of the drive since it's sitting in salt water during the summer months. Do all the required maintenance.

I'd check the water every month and top off with distilled water if it's low..

Welcome!

- know where you are boating at all times, run navigational charts

Clearly a vagabond with no boat...

Grumble, grumble, grumble....

o_O:rolleyes:
