Boat Info
2002 460DA
Engines
Cummins 480CE
Hey All! I’m looking to purchase a 2002 460DA with 650hrs on Cummins 480CE engines. Boat is a one owner freshwater boat very well taken care of other than the owner said the aftercoolers have never been serviced should this be a concern? What is the recommended service intervals on the aftercoolers? The only known problems that showed up on survey was fire extinguishers out of date, no flare kits onboard, and the port engine vibrates boat when put into gear until you bump the rpm up maybe 25 more rpm then smooths out. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated!!

Okay... working backwards...

Engines should idle at 650rpms. If they are not then they will have a vibration and need to be adjusted. Verify this is the issue because my second guess is prop work and that’s a boat buck. (I would like to to know what your wot rpm was as well)

Here is the story in aftercoolers....

They have an aluminum case with copper cores. In theory you remove the cores every 18-24 months and clean them then grease everything with metal lube and replace the gaskets and put back together. They problem you now have is the cores will not come out of the cases and are corroded together. So... even though they are working perfectly fine you cannot service them properly and they have reached the end of there useful life if they have been in saltwater.

A few years back Cummins changed the design and the cost skyrocketed so they are 3900.00 each now.

To answer your question no, it’s not a big deal but it’s a deferred maintenance item that is going to cost you 7500 bucks.

If it were me I would require the owner remove the aftercoolers and cores as part of the deal, if they won’t cone out then you have your answer but maybe you’ll get lucky if it has been in freshwater it’s entire life and the anodes have been maintained.

I am intimately familiar with all the systems on this boat having completely restored mine over the past 2 years. If you want to chat on the phone shoot me a pm with your phone number.

Just so I can be 100% honest, if that’s all the surveyor noted then you need another surveyor or you found the unicorn.

Last comment. There is a 460 thread on this forum that has a ton of info. Make sure you find that. And if you can change the title of your post to be a little more specific. I got lucky finding your post, welcome to CSR. This is an awesome group!

Thanks guys for the info and the link! Also looking at a 2004 420DA with 270hrs. Really like both but don’t have any experience with these types of boats as I’ve always had and still have go fast boats. We like the size and room of the 2002 460DA but like the newer look of the 420DA which way would you guys lean more towards if you were looking at both? The 460 has 650hrs both freshwater boats both very well maintained. I have a family of 4 being my wife and I and 2 girls. Thanks for any input.
