I was wondering where to go for boat insurance. I had Falvey through NBOA but as of August 31 they are not writing policies anymore. The new quote from NBOA is $2400 to go with Safewaters insurance company they found. Has anyone ever heard of or had experience with Safewaters?

It Is important to carefully read your coverage and look the company up to see if it is highly rated by A.M. Best. The company may or may not be good. Doing due diligence is important. We just received our renewal from Chubb and noticed that losses due to mechanical failures were excluded. For additional premium these losses could be covered. The policy was virtually unchanged from the prior year except for the addition of this important exclusion. Many people just pay the premium without knowing what they are buying.

I use NBOA as a broker for this boat but I used Alan Mott http://www.boat-ins.com/ as a broker for my old boat for many years. He had me with one company and when they raised their rates he found me another one that was more reasonably priced. They are in Huntington. You can try them for a quote for comparison.

Try Chubb Yachtsman Policy-very reasonable price and proper coverage for a boat like yours-will include coverage for your dink if you have one at no extra cost-be safe

I'm no expert by any means and I boat on Lake Michigan so apples and oranges but i shopped insurance in July because the incumbent wanted what i considered an unreasonable rate hike with degraded coverage. I went with United Marine Underwriters. Improved coverage at same price I paid last year. I haven't had a claim and I hope I don't but good to deal with so far.

Read the exclusions and make sure they work for you.

Marine insurance is strange. Have been with Chubb for the past year. No claims and premium went up 12% for next year. Called around and NBOA is quoting $550/year cheaper for better insurance. Told a dock neighbor and he called NBOA. For some reason they quoted him through the roof.

Don’t get it!

Insurance companies score you based upon credit rating and multiple other factors. Your score sets the premium. We are all different.

Last year our insurance was to double. I shopped around and got it for less than half I was going to pay. Company want auto driving record so looks they look at whole picture not just the boat. A boat course helps to lower rates. No idea what it we have but took it through a night course at a university. It was 4 hours a week for 12 weeks. Learned a lot about navigation and how boats work. Admiral got better mark than me even though we both did our home work the sane way.

The response I got when I asked NBOA on mechanical failure was this...
Mechanical failure is usually due to lack of maintenance and caring for the boat.

None of our companies cover for wear and tear and not maintaining the boat.

Can you explain your mechanical failure part of your policy? According to the NBOA broker it doesn’t exist.

You are always at a disadvantage when dealing with insurance companies on issues of contract law. For three hundred dollars of added premium, you are at the table and in the discussion concerning a claim involving a question of loss due to mechanical failure. My policy eliminates the paragraph that lists loss caused by mechanical failures as an an excluded loss. The base policy specifically lists it as a reason to deny a claim. Not saying there would not be a fight to get coverage for such a loss, but getting mechanical failures off the list of excluded covered losses seems like a good thing for a consumer.

I just got my CHUBB policy yesterday for my 320 and noticed the exclusions as well

Are you going to upgrade to the policy that covers losses caused by mechanical failure? Added premium was around $300 for our boat.

You may be misunderstanding the coverage. The policy does not insure against wear and tear. It insures for a loss caused by the failure of some mechanical system. For example, if you were running the boat and a fuel leak developed because of a fuel system component failure and the boat was lost due to fire. You would want to have coverage for that type of loss.

I have an "Agreed Value" policy. The value was set at the time of purchase (9-2013) based on the BUC Value and Survey input. If I shop this policy for a competitive replacement will this then effect my "Agreed Value?" Will the values be adjusted for 5 years of depreciation?

My policy through NBOA/AIG does not contain a mechanical failure exclusion.
