Ads and more ads... what gives

Running ABP (ad block pro) on PC in Firefox blocks all ads: CSR and AdSense. I don't expect the average user to adjust (or want to) their settings to enable just CSR ads.

I am getting ads in the browser on my laptop.

At times inserted directly in a post.

I wonder if that makes a diff? I've hated iOS11 on my ipad so I've resisted upgrading my phone...

I'll say "no" since I have 11.4.1, see the empty spaces between each post and see ads within posts. Got an ad for Slidebelts - don't know what Slidebelts is, and never looked at them anywhere else online.
Additionally, I'm seeing a plethora of ads on Firefox on my Linux laptop. Lending Tree banner is placed above the banner ad for Corinthian Marine.

Oh - and I'm getting at least six phone calls a day on my cell phone with local numbers that I don't know. But that's a whole different kind of aggravation.

On my desktop and laptop I use Chrome with "Ad Block Plus"... no spammy ads. No blank spots.. Just the normal Marine banner ads from CSR sponsors.

Using Firefox or IE to check (no Ad Block), I got spam ads... I guess Ad Block Plus works pretty well.

I tried Chrome once but just couldn't get the hang of it for some reason...
So now I'm wondering which of our advertisers owns this ad  :D

Actually, that ad is generated/selected for YOUR computer from YOUR browser history via tracking cookies.

There are a couple of things you can do.
First clear your browsing history and delete cookies. Most of these ad generators tap into your web browser's history and provide a best guess of your interests.
Also, When you first open up CSR right click on one of the intrusive ads then click on inspect element. In the list look for things like googleads, doubleclick, adcontent, etc. These will be rather longs strings of text. Click on that string and it will highlight the entire ad string then click on delete element. Poof the ad goes away and you can continue your browsing enjoyment. It's a PIA but it feels good you beat it...…
If this continues I'll be reconsidering my membership; but who cares...

Did anyone click to see what happened with Wendy Williams?
All I get are ads for car dealerships, auto parts, and Boat stuff. I must not be living right...................

I used to run a forum, and I had no issue paying for a sponsorship to keep CSR going, especially with the promise of no ads for sponsors. I don't even mind the boating-related ads.

Sitting here in my living room with the wife and kids around, the last thing I need is "flirty singles," and "Latin girls" on every screen. There is nothing in my history to deserve this, and it makes me less likely to continue spending time here.

FYI: Some of the comments insinuate that ads are generated by browser history. This may be true in some cases. In other cases it may have to do with Google. They track everything. If your wife uses the same machine to shop for bikinis, it will generate a category of ads. Some ads are not appropriate. There are several other reasons ads are generated. Most can be blocked with ad blockers. I strongly recommend moving away from using Google. Startpage.com uses Google as a backend but disguises your searches and does not track. You will find a large number of ads will be restricted. Amazon also tracks and feeds you ads. Using a VPN like ipvanish.com will also help to preserve your privacy.

Not getting ads. If they start I will stop visiting this site. I pay $25 per year to sponsor.

Techmitch: I guess I was trying to soften the statement. The ad that was shown as an example was of a porn type ad. “Typically” ads like that are generated because someone has visited a pornography web site. That isn’t an absolute as there are some cases where ads like that can be pushed because of completely appropriate searches or traffic. Just trying to present diplomatic information. Your point is well taken and valid

Same machine, same browser.

Different forum I visit a lot. NO AD's. None. Nadda.

I thought that is why I was paying for a sponsorship, so that I didn't have to deal with ads?

Honestly, the ads that I see are few and far between. I simply ignore them and read what I want to read. Unfortunately it is the way of the World Wide Web and will only be more prevalent.

Agree somewhat but at one time it was understood that by sponsoring the site, you wouldn’t see them. I guess that’s not the case anymore. This probably explains why the majority of the members complaining on this thread are paying members/sponsors of this site. Ironically, not the OP however.;)

This is ridiculous! I am a sponsor as well & here is a small sample of the ads popping up at the top on my mobile version. It really distracts from my reading of the responses within a thread.

Well they missed the mark on that one. I'm staring at a nice "Stroke Recovery at Home" ad, as we speak. Maybe I had a stroke and just don't remember visiting related sites. "machine intelligence" is the new oxymoron.
