Hey everyone - just purchased my first Sea Ray and new to me 2009 195 Sport the other day. I was looking around the stern and the storage space in particular. I have concerns about items getting into the motor and or protecting my items from heat.

Anyone have any suggestions on a board, or some type of material I can connect to the factory small “stop” white pieces? Not sure what to use - plan is to then wrap the new board in foil for added heat protection since it will be close to the motor.

Pic is the area I am talking about and hoping to add a taller piece of something at the top of the pic - parallel to the motor. Any help is appreciate for type of material you would recommend - of course a cut to size piece of plywood would suffice but not sure if there is something better for this environment/application - thanks!

Welcome to CSR!

This is the material you'd want to use. Cuts like plywood, and you can use stainless hardware to secure it to the boat. You wouldn't need to wrap it in foil either.

Looks like a previous owner removed the panels that would have been installed by Sea Ray to separate the engine from the storage area. Similar to those other panels you have, but they were much taller with a large opening in the middle of them for access to the engine (the opening then had canvas that snapped over the hole to cover it). Check with the previous owner - it might be in his basement. I "thought" I remembered seeing those pieces go all the way up to help support the sunpad - but it's been a while. The top edge of those pieces was then double or tripled up for extra surface area. I could be wrong on that - or remembering something from a different model.

However, you can use anything you want - even plywood. Starboard is a commonly used material and would be fine, if a little heavy. Although there wouldn't be a whole lot being used here. The original material is much lighter - I'm not sure exactly what it is called, but it seems like some kind of expanded PVC material.

As mentioned, no need for foil anywhere.

Looks like something is missing on yours where the L brackets are on the engine side. My 185 has a tall piece of wood / starboard material on each side of the engine that creates a storage area on both sides of the engine. there is a cutout on each that is covered with canvas that snaps on so you can get access to the sides of the engine easily. Heat is not an issue. I keep a bucket on one side and crate with supplies etc on the other. Here are some pictures I found (not my boat).

Yes, what Kevin said. An alternative would be to find a plastic tub that fits... as long as you're not right up against the motor you should be OK.

You're missing a piece. The brackets are there, but there should be a tall section of the white board that separates the engine from the storage area.

Thanks everyone - I assumed there had to be a piece there originally with the brackets in place. I will check with the seller.

Thanks for the ideas! Took her out for the maiden voyage last evening (boat has 100 hours and motor has 1 hour - brand new) - and this boat handles a tad better than my old 1994 Starcraft Fish and Ski - ha!

Thanks again everyone - appreciate it!

Brand new motor - your panels were probably removed when they installed the new motor and were not put back in.

Another vote for starboard or equivalent. You’ll be happier in the long run. Enjoy the boat!

I placed an old cooler on one side and the other a plastic tub. Use the plastic tub for PFD's and the cooler for other small items like water shoes, back up towels and picnic items.

I'd see if you could find out who replaced motor and see if they have those panels. Not sure if the 195 is the same, but on my 205, there are female fittings attached to the top of those pieces, and a male rubber piece attached to sunpad that help hold it down.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. The person I bought the boat from found the 2 panels, so despite ordering more Starboard I will be installing the stock brackets - and maybe make use out of the pieces of Starboard I had already ordered. Thanks again!

Might as well keep the starboard if you've already ordered it. I've not done it, but often contemplated adding a piece of it across the front of the engine to make more storage area under the rear bench seat. Not a lot of room there, but would be a good place for swim noodles, rafts, and other lightweight stuff. The extra shield would keep anything from getting into the front belt drive of the engine.
