340 SUNDANCER THREAD

That seems low to me^^ at least for clean ones.

And speed wise my 2002 with 8.1s is odd it crises at 25-26mph at 3600, but top speed is 41.8mph....with v drives.

There are a lot of factors to consider. Location is one, certain areas of the country will factor into the equation. In my case I can only speak to the north east, as I was loooking st boats between VA and ME. Also worth noting there seems to be a big difference between what asking price are, and what boats are actually selling for. I’ll also say that I was surprised how many people didn’t have detailed maintenance records. Several people said what they had done, but very few had a paper trail to go with it.

With the above said I very happy with one I purchased and once I get some pictures, I post them into the thread.

I'm looking to replace some speakers in my '01 340 and am looking at JL mx770's for the arch. Has anyone installed these on their 340? When I put the Polk mm651um in I had to get a spacer ring for one side as a bolt was in the way.

Any help would be great!

Thanks

We are looking at anywhere from a 340-400 DA, in the year range of 2004-2008. I know this has been brought up a lot before but 2 questions. People with the 8.1 horizon v drives, is a typical fuel burn around 30GPH and cruise of around 25mph? We had a 07 310DA years ago, that was around these number as far as I could recall but at that was 8 years ago.

Also anyone have any experience transporting a 340DA any distance by trailer? We have residence in central FL and Michigan so thought about keeping it in FL most the year over at Daytona but bringing it up to Michigan where we live on Lake Huron for the summers to use.

If there is anything else we should look out for feel free to chime in. Seems like a lot of options for this year range for 340's on the market right now.

Thanks for any input!

When I installed JL MX650's in my 99 340 arch they required spacers both sides. If the 770's are as deep or deeper you'll be in the same boat.

Are you planning on transporting yourself or paying someone? FL to MI would be a pricey trip to make twice a year if you're paying to have it done. Maybe $5k per trip? $10k per year....you'd be better off buying a second boat to keep in Michigan :)

I assume you really want a 400 but are considering the 340 only because you believe it to be marginally trailerable? There are people around here that do tow 340's. But I bet they will tell you FL to MI twice a year is not particularly realistic...

I have a buddy that owns a company in Michigan by us that could do the transporting for us so cost would be a significant savings from what would it normally would be. He has his CDL and transports large equipment now for his business so he said it'd be no problem as long as I could get a trailer for it and I'd ride both ways to keep him company. We may even just keep it in FL all year, but it's a thought since we live right in a harbor in Michigan on Lake Huron, where the boat would be a few houses away docked and could be used a lot.

To your 1st question, yes if we were not contemplating bringing to Michigan, I'd go with a 420DA probably for size, 2nd bath (we are family of five now and possible adopting an infant in the next year), and diesels.

Do you remember how big a spacer you needed? I don't mind doing a spacer but if its something massive I'll have to figure something else out.

Even if you owned the tow rig and trailer, just the cost of getting the boat from point A to B each year would add up, keep in mind, in addition to fuel, you have a lot of crap to deal with, removing stuff from the arch, getting the boat and trailer ready for such a trip, sounds like a lot of work and lot can go wrong along the way. IMO, I would rather deal with a second boat.

I would like to replace the horn on my 2001 340. Can anyone recommend a "drop in" replacement. I want to get rid of the kind that sounds digital, or like a police boat.

Also any suggestions on what kind of bulb (the A/C bulb) is supposed to go into the 2 lights in the celling (over the galley and dinette). I want to put LED's in, but not sure what kind of bulb it is supposed to be (there wasn't any bulb there when I bought the boat).

Thanks in advance

I can't offer a suggestion for a drop in replacement horn but if/when my horn goes out I am going to install MUCH louder trumpet horns on the radar arch....just offering a different approach in case you are interested....

Thanks Cliff, that is on my winter project list. But I think the basic drop in horns are cheep, and would like to replace the horrible sounding one for the remainder of the season.

A drop in will sound like the duck. Not appealling but effective. I am looking to add duel trumpets up on the arch for a more manly sound. Probably going electric for simplicity and most likely Schmitt-Ongaro. I am prewiring when I pull my Radar power up the arch this week.

Just about any of the cheapo marine horns you find on Amazon will work. Since they are good for about 2 years when mounted in the OEM configuration you might as well go cheap. I grabbed a $20 rig from Amazon and spent about 10 minutes make the mount work. It's quite painless once you get in the anchor locker.

My wet sounds 6.5 fit with no spacers and scream.

Fred chall marine supply in Freeport has a direct Fiamme horn replacement . $40 bucks comes with horn and grill and gaskets. Save the old mount which the 2 screws go into.

I had a 2001 340 with 7.4 Horizon motors surveyed this week. Unfortunately, the generator wasn’t operable, and I mentioned prior to the survey that I expected that to be working if the deal moves forward. The broker felt it was an easy fix and they’d get it done… however, it turns out the genny is toast. So now the seller is considering if they want to offer a concession. While they ponder, something that’s been on my mind is that the boat’s bottom needs to be blasted due to lousy painting over the years and now as the excitement of getting this boat has worn off, I wonder if the boat’s speeed and RPM are a bit on the low side.

I’m curious if everyone with 7.4’s thinks this is inline or too low, regardless of the lousy bottom. Speed was recorded via GPS and the boat had 1/2 tank of gas, no water and holding tank was empty, and 3 adults.

WOT was 4,500 port and 4,600 starboard
@3,500 ran 25 mph
@4,000 ran 28 mph
WOT was 4,500/4,600 and 29 mph.

WOT should be 4800 for those engines.. Find out what props are on it...

Ok someone was asking about dash.

Here is the new set up currently. Lowrance HD’s 9 gen 3 and lowrance link-8 vhf. Ais is working, along with stereo control via NMEA 2000, and engine data from gateway.

I currently own a 2001 340 with the 7.4 Horizions. Those speeds/RPM number are low. Over a recent weekend trip I run normally 3500-3600 RPM and get 28-29 MPH. If I hit 4k RPM I'm around 32-33 MPH. I run the standard 3 blade 17x17 props spec'd for the boat. Operating range at WOT should be 4400-4800 RPM. I believe there is a plate on the motor that specs the max operating RPMs.
