Hey all I am looking to do a 3 day trip somewhere nice with a good night life maybe a nice area to walk around during the day as well, trip leaving from north shore Long Island was curious where to go not looking to go as far as block island but was thinking somewhere maybe in CT looking to travel approx 3 1/2 hours or less. My usual day trip is Stamford looking to go a little further then that, let’s hear what you guys recommend?! Thanks

Mystic, CT if you want to go that far - Old Saybrook (saybrook point marina) or essex CT would be a nice (shorter) trip too.....what about Greenport NY?

Milford checks off most of your boxes, but its small (without a car)
Branford has a nice marina, dinghy to brewery. Longish walk to town, fun restaurants within a mile.
Westbrook has a nice marina, dinghy to nearby restaurant, marina shuttle to shopping.
New London is not a great cruising harbor but a lively little city and close to casinos, or go up river to American Wharf if you want to be close to casinos.
Mystic is like boating heaven.

If you care to get away from marinas, The CT shoreline is dotted with islands that provide semi protected anchorage and natural beauty.

Oops, left out the CT River. We like Old Saybrook, Essex and an afternoon in Hamburg Cove.

Not sure where your homeport is, so that makes it hard to offer suggestions. All of those offered are great destinations. There is also Mattituck, nice little town and you can hire a car and do some excellent wine tasting, shop the framers markets etc.

Head upstate. The ride up the Hudson is beautiful. So far I’ve only stayed in Kingston. The town dock is very reasonable, and located right at the downtown waterfront. It’s only a few blocks long but there are several restaurants and bars. We always have a good time. Can’t remember if there is a shower at the town dock or not. We use the shower on the boat. But there is a private marina across the canal that has showers and fuel, but it requires a taxi or dinghy ride from there to get to where the bars and restaurants are.
I’ve heard that Newburgh is a good place to stay too but haven’t tried it yet.
Hoping to head up that way sometime in September.
Our son is going to be a freshman at RPI in Troy this year so we’re hoping to explore the Hudson a little further north at some point.
Trip up the Harlem River is an easy one with a few spots that are pretty scenic. The operator for the railroad turnbirdge at Spuyten Dyvil monitors channel 13 and will open it for you pretty quickly as long as the train isn’t on its way through, if it is, you may have to wait just a few minutes.
Stop for gas at the state run marina in Alpine NJ on the west side of the river a short distance north of Manhattan. Prices are about the best you’ll find on the water.
We like Liberty Landing in Jersey City for trips to the city. It’s pricey at about $4.00 a foot plus electric, but it’s a nice well protected place with no rocking and great views of lower Manhattan. Short water shuttle ride across to the City right there, and quick Uber to Hoboken where the nightlife is very lively with lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. There is a nice clubhouse there with great showers if you don’t want to just take them on the boat, and the ride down the East River is really nice.
We’re probably heading there for a quick overnight sometime in mid August when the kids finish their summer jobs and before they go back to College.

I am in Glen Cove LI

North port,Huntington and Port Jeff are all good spots. Camp beach (Westport CT) town marina is another good spot. Not sure how Far East you are willing to go with your boat?

Mattituck is definitely within your 3 1/2 hour range. I am across the sound from you in New Rochelle so it is approximately the same distance for me. We stay at Strong's Water Club. Northport, Huntington and Port Jeff are also great suggestions and you could also break up the trip a bit by stopping at any of these on your way to Mattituck

If you are up for a south shore adventure and happen to be a TOBAY resident then come through the city and head to the south shore TOBAY marina. Great place (especially with resident pricing - otherwise non-residents is M-Th or by Dockmaster permission) and if you have resident parking you can leave the boat there and drive home if you arrange to get your vehicle there.

As mentioned Essex and Mystic are great. I've wanted to do Greenport for a while but haven't yet.

They may be outside your 3.5 hour range though. Mystic is a good 3 hours for me and I'm in Port Jeff. To get to Greenport you would need to go to Orient and head back west through the Peconic - but I understand it has a good nightlife scene.

Essex is closer, and the town is nice and there are a couple marinas. Essex Island Marina is nice and they have good facilities. There are a number of restaurants, including the historic (and good) Griswold Inn.

There are several commercial marinas in Mystic, but staying at Mystic Seaport Museum is fantastic. The rates are reasonable, museum admission is included, and you get the run of the grounds at night after it closes. You could dingy down to Main Street if you want a more lively evening.

I haven't been to Mattituck in years, but it could be a good spot for a night. Probably not 3; it's small and you have to walk about 1/2 mile to the Love Lane, the little one-block shopping district. There's no night scene to speak of.

Port Jeff is OK for transients, but it doesn't have a good reputation as being particularly friendly. Danfords Marina is expensive and really the only marina in town unless you want a mooring or to anchor. If you anchor out it's a long dingy ride into town from the designated spots. There is supposed to be a town dingy dock but don't even know where it is. There are many restaurants / bars right on the water though and it is hopping in the summer.

You might consider breaking up over a couple places. Perhaps 2 nights at Mystic, and a night at Essex or Port Jeff.

Just an FYI about Mystic - look at your charts. The river is long and a wake free zone. There are a couple marinas between the RR and the highway bridges. To get to the Seaport you need to go through the railroad swing bridge and wait for the highway bascule bridge to open, which is 1x per hour at 40 mins past. You will NOT fit under it. Try to be at the RR bridge at 20 mins past the hour to be sure you make it through at get to the highway bridge when it opens.

We usually do Greenport once a year... This year we did Greenport with Sag harbor.. Loved both... If i had to pick one i would do Greenport again, As its on the trip again next year... This year gonna take a ride up the Hudson in the Fall... Just still debating on where to stay

The town dock in Kingston is good. Price is right and steps away from some restaurants and bars. Kind of a small area right there but nice place to go. I’m hoping to head up there either in mid August, or if not then I’ll head up in early fall sometime.
I may try Newburgh this time too. Heard the waterfront is a nice destination.

My son is starting school at RPI up in Troy next month. I want to look in to transient marinas up that way. It would be nice to be able to take a ride up the Hudson in the Fall to visit him in school.
