Proud new owner of a 2004 420 DA. Several items need fixing up and I am hoping to get some advice from DA owners.

1. Water pump very loud, vibrates and periodically will not shut off. HAve checked for any signs of water leaks in system and there appears to be none. Is the repairable or am I better to purchase a replacement ... or other?

2. Master Stateroom head appears to lose its seal. I suspect this is simply a Vac-u-Flush maintenance kit.

3. Top side fridge vibrates, is loud, and seems to run +70% of the time. Any advice short of replacement?

4. Generator not pumping water now. Suspect an impeller which I will check.

Appreciate any advice from seasoned owners.

Congrats on your new boat.

1. It is probably original. I'd replace it with a new pump. You'll be amazed at how much quieter and better the new pumps are. $150
2. Ball seal needs to be replaced. Youtube has several videos on how to do this. There are also threads and a video on this site. $100
3. This could be a sign of a compressor that is going bad. What is the temperature in the fridge? You'll have to pull the fridge and locate the source of the noise to allow for any troubleshooting. ? 0-$1000+
4. I would replace the impeller while you are down there inspecting it. Look for any broken vanes from the old impeller. They may be blocking the flow of water and need to be located or flushed out. $50

I have a Norcold in the cockpit (little one) and one in the cabin (fridge/freezer, tall kind). They both make a low pitched rumble and cycle very frequently. I think that's a characteristic of Norcold (not sure if you have Norcold, though).

Replace your current fresh water pump with the Shurflo Model 4148-153-E75. 4gpm vs 3gpm and MUCH MUCH quieter. You can also remove the accummulator pump while you're doing it. It's no longer required with the more advanced pressure system on the new pump. I did the same thing just 2 weeks and and it's night and day difference in water pressure and sound.

And here's a handy tip. The mounting hole spacing of the 2 pumps is different and I didn't want to have to drill 3 new holes in the boat. Instead I removed the rubber mounting bracket from the old pump and attached it to the new pump. Had to drill a hole through the rubber to accommodate the pump mounting bolt spacing but that was easily accomplished above decks. Re-installation was then a breeze using the original screws and screw holes.

Congratulations and good luck.

Bart,
Just swapped out my water pump!!! ITs fantastic. I had to keep the accumulator for now . I need fittings.

Thanx again

Rob

Just a quick update ...
$115 water-pump replacement with new sur-flow model fixed pressure and noise completely;
Vacufluch seal replacement and a bit of cleaning fixed stateroom head;
New topside fridge going in early spring;
New impellor fixed generator and all running wonderfully now;
Will be updating house batteries this spring to 6V Trojan L16H-AC's with their battery watering kits.

After a long winter, looking forward to getting the boat out again.

So I replaced my pump with the Sureflo described above and it won’t shut off. Pressure doesn’t seem to be that much better either. I also removed the accumulater. Any thoughts? I think there is an adjustment that can be made but did anyone else have this issue?

Have you cleaned the faucet strainers? I found there would be a lot of debris in the screens especially in the galley sink.
Always worse after de-winterization or after repairs to the water system.
This could help with the pressure problem, not shutting off is another story. I do remember being able to adjust the pressure valve on some models.

If its not shutting off you might have an air leak on the suction side, meaning somewhere between the water tank and the water pump you are sucking in air with the water keeping it from pressurizing. These leaks usually occur at the in-line water strainer.

That helps me out too Bart thank you.

My water pressure is terrible .. on and off the tank.

Rob
Be sure to pull faucet screens and clean them. I found a huge improvement in water pressure with that alone
