Thanks guys. Talked to Chris and offer made today so we shall see. How about boat transporter to Ohio???

Any recent experiences/recommendations for surveyors? I'm looking at a 2006 280 or 290 dancer. In the Saybrook area.

Also, thoughts on having a mechanic look at the engines/drives rather than just the surveyor?

Sorry to say but go with both, JUST to be safe. Typically if your "local" motor dealer is viable you can start a relationship with them and they will treat you right long term

I used Chris Nebel 3 weeks ago to purchase ours. Nice guy, laid back, survey and sea trial done at Brewers Deep River, we are keeping the boat here, typing from it right now.
Chris doesn't do engines, one of the surveyors I was referred to by MANY people as one who does both boat and engines is Adrian Johnson, out of Mystic. Johnson Marine Services. He seems to be the most highly regarded surveyor around this corner of the state, and he does travel far...very far if the boat is big enough. He was a bit booked out when I called before we got referred to Capt Chris.

Re: Engine surveys, the way Chris approached it...he does basic stuff while examining the boat, and he'll hover over the engines as you do the sea trial. However he does not do the compression tests nor computer printout. He does measure temps of the risers during the run. He says generally an engine will show its condition during a good 30 minute sea trial, getting up to recommended RPMs at WOT, the sounds it makes, engine temps...will determine if you should pursue an engine survey or not once you factor in hours and results of his visual exam. We had an issue with an engine (backfiring/popping)...so after that, had the yard do a compression check on it just to be safe. (came out fine within tolerances).
