Make sure you have the NavBus option enabled in addition to the Smartcraft option (it's on the "Comms" display on my Explorer 657). I installed my gateway and everything worked great until I deselected the NavBus - oops.

The hours are stored in the ECM on the engine. I really doubt the user could reset that - every used boat out there would have almost zero hours on it.

Did you try the Master Reset?

Make sure you find a CD changer cable made for or by Clarion. Some of the ones on E bay listed as Universal (Aiwa, etc.) will not work.

Replace the unit with an XMD1 and find a clarion C-bus CD changer cable (13-pin DIN - round, not square). I got both of these on E Bay. Cut the Cd changer cable and use an ohm meter to find the correct wires using these instructions...
