High fuel dilution reading in oil sample on a Cummins QSM11 (w/288 hours)

You could request a pressure test on the engine to determine if it is a ring or valve seating issue ... I would first take the sample report to a CERTIFIED CUMMINs mechanic and get their input. You could then present the information to the seller and determine the next step ... if any. It...

    Cat 3126 oil analysis

If there is a generator ... wouldn't hurt to have it checked too.

    Please weigh in

You could get the oil analyzed and "know" for certain or just change the oil and remove all doubt.

    Typical fuel consumption

Okay I have to ask ... what do you consider "trawler speed"???

    Battery or Alternator Issue??

Have been on a few boats that the volt meters like to dance at idle ... never seemed to bother anything and everything always checked out ... always seemed to calm down after a bit or once you started running the engine. I was told once it has something to do with the where the alternator kicks...

    Cat 3208 shutoff solenoids

Ugh!!! that’s what I was afraid of. I'll replace both to be safe and keep the old good one as a backup I guess. Thanks for your input.

    Clipped Props

Have been informed that the props on my boat were oversized and trimmed to fit in the tunnels ... said it was a good thing but I'm wondering is anyone else has heard or done this. He went on to explain that the oem props used to burn the glass in the tunnels and this was one of the fixes many used.

    Fuel Primers on a 3208

At this point its "Search and Determination" going through all the systems to determine what needs attention before I take the next step. (The ToDo List) Yes, an oil and a fuel filter change is in order before we splash her in August or September but I have a few issues I need or needed some...

    Zincs

Does ANYBODY know where the zincs are located on the 3208? turbo only. I've heard that there are 7 but I have no clue where to look? Are the heads for the zincs marked any differently ... all the bolt heads look pretty much the same. Thanks in advance,

    Fuel Primers on a 3208

Umm ... What is normal when using the priming pump on the 3208? With my starboard engine primer I can hear the fuel squirting back into the fuel tank via what I believe is the bypass or return line. Doesn't feel like there is any pressure being built up, but again I'm not sure if there should...

    Cat 3208 shutoff solenoids

Umm ... one of my shut off Solenoids is loose at the base ... the base is secure but the body wiggles a little bit. Do I need to replace this or is this normal? New to diesel engines so the only thing I have to compare them to is the other engine...

Up and Over - Walk thru

Has anyone put a walk thru in their transom? Ours is an up and over which gets to be a pain after awhile so we are looking at a possible mod so to speak. Doesn't appear to be a structural issue ... but was hoping to chat with someone who may have done one already before I break out the...

    Hole in the Water Club

This is actually my third restoration (and largest) not sure if it qualifies as an addiction but I love working on my boat ... where does the line form for this addiction? .... I mean .... club. :smt101

    Canvas and Cockpit Carpet

Personally ... local is the safest way to go ... have seen ordered kits that just didn't match up one way or another and then there are those boats that have MODIFICATIONS. LOL Most marine upholsters (think that's what their called) come out, give you a quote, remove and install (most even...

    Cutless Bearing replacement

I've done a few clients in the water using my prop removal tool and old cutlass bearings split in half with the rubber removed and hose clamps to keep them in place ... worked great!!! Its the ones where the retaining screws are seized or the heads are stripped that require the haul-out...
