The only thing 'typical' about repair costs is that different shops charge different rates. Check each one out first.

Nothing wrong, this is normal. Get a separate charger for the gen battery to keep it charged.

You probably have the Kohler 5ECD genset with the 2" digital remote gauge. It needs to have the digital controller reprogrammed by a Kohler dealer. This should solve the problem.
