Just completed the new spark plugs and wires on my 5.0 Mercruiser. Since my boat is a fresh water use only I had no problem removing the exhaust manifolds, risers and elbows. By removing in sections the weight is not as bad. The actual spark plug and wire installation was unbelievably easy...
My boat has 634 hours and I have no reason to believe the plugs have ever been changed! I bought the boat with 159 hours on it. I did a rotor, distributor cap last year but did not want to do the plugs since it was still running good. Now I'm convinced the plugs and wires need changing. My...
Looks like you may be in saltwater which would make rusted manifolds an issue and something to keep an eye on. I'm strickly a fresh water boater and hopefully will not encounter any rust issues
I'm just thinking if the exhaust manifolds are removed then I could do a better job without messing up a thread or breaking a plug. I will also replace the plug wires at the same time. I don't think the plugs have ever been changed and it has over 400 hours on it. It ran great last season...
Need to change the plugs but cannot see them! Does it make sense to pull the exhaust manifolds to do this job easily without the chance of cross threading or breaking a plug?
My 2003 5.0 MPI Alpha Drive with single point system is now winterized and I was reading some of the threads on this system and decided to comment. Years ago when winterizing the very first time I did not necessarily trust this single point system. I'm aware how clogs can prevent certain...
My son and I have noticed some streaks of white appearing in the fabric of our Bimini tops.
These boats are trailer queens and not in the sun 100% of the time. What can cause this? Is China now making Sunbrella fabric?
Update on my problem. I bought a fuel pressure test gauge and hooked it to the port on the engine. Fuel pressure initializes to a little over 40 lbs and then drops back to 35. Engine running it holds around 33 lbs. This problem has not shown up again since that one day on the first weekend...
Many thanks for posting information like this!!!! I agree with the markup on Mercruiser parts that are nothing more than auto parts. Found this out when replacing the IAC valve (twice) and now even carry a spare.
Yes I have a fuel cooler. It's located on the port side of the engine down low. Pump and one of the regulators is located inside a cavity. Hard to get to!!
From looking at online parts diagrams there are two fuel pressure regulators on this 2003 5.0 serial # OM626769. Neither of these are cheap but just wonder which one is the likely trouble maker. One is on top of the intake manifold and the other is on the port side of the engine inside the...
Had trouble getting the engine to run yesterday a couple of times. It happens after I run for a while and shut it down. When I restart it acts like it will barely run and eventually quits. It always restarts quickly but no matter where I put the throttle it seems to act like it's starving...
I had a bad ignition switch that caused this exact problem and finally after having the starter rebuilt and a new battery I determined the switch was bad.
