Thanks. Looks like they are not cheap. Will replace if that's the right answer but I read somewhere that they may be relatively easy to clean and repair.

My hatch actuator / lift is struggling mightily to open and close the engine hatch on my 2003 340 DA. They are slow and noisy (groaning) Any ideas on how to repair or replace them before they fail? Thanks.

Lifting the lever did in fact add water to the bowl. Now it seems to be working normally again (water comes into the bowl after flushing). It is possible that fixed it; or it was some other intermittent issue.
