I think you messed up the carb adjustment. "I played with the idle speed and fuel/air mixture screws and got it to idle at a steady 900 -1,000 RPMs" tells me the adjustment is off. Go to the adjustment procedure or take it to a shop to do it for you.

And a quick question. I have the HIN and would like to know how to decipher it. HIN: US-SERA8737L899

Agree with #3 and #4. Blue smoke upon start up, is most likely nothing more than a weak valve seal. You don't have to pull head to replace them but probably can't do it yourself. Here a impression how to replace them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ob_4-F-m1FI
