Thank you for the responses. It looks like I'm not the only one with this problem. Once I find the cap I'll get a couple just to be on the safe side.

The connector for the safety chain corroded away years ago by the look of it. I guess all I can do is take a better look next time I take it off. I didn't see any corresponding connection point anywhere. I'm at a loss.

I have a 1986 SeaRay 300 Weekender. The gas cap has no restraining gear once it is removed to get gas. I'm afraid I'll drop it into the drink and have nothing to replace it. I have attached a photo of it. If anyone can ID it for me I'd be very grateful. Thanks for any help.
