my 77 300 weekender has water in the foam filled small bilge area under the cabin floor. this area is normally sealed with no acess but istepped down 1 day onto a squishy carpet? I cut aan acess hole and the foam is saoked and heavy i think it has been wet a long time but dont know where it...
I have a 77 and a 76 and my uncle has a 78. I also have the original service manual if it has mercruisers. let me know and maybe I can help. Im no mechanic but ive been through every inch of my engine bays and bilge winterizing and upgrading plumbing etc... got any pics?

Not sure about the transome, but I have a tri axle trailer for mine and it tows beatiful behind a 3/4 ton diesel. I actually just picked up a 76 300 with twin 351s with 146 hours on rebuilds. its very nice, I plan on selling it in the spring.
I love my 77 300. The straight inboards are fantastic, performs well and docking is a breeze. With twin 330hp 454s I cruise at 32 and top out at a little over 40mph
