Hi,
Just stumbled on this thread because I too (thanks to H&W Marine in Marshall, TX) have a cracked engine cover. They won't man up to the damage so its either lawyer-up or figure out a repair myself and either way find a new repair shop. I'm new to boating (just purchased my '97 190 BR in May) and am trying to get the facts on this engine cover that so many of us seem to have a problem with. So from the factory its not fiberglass but people have been buying the fiberglass replacements on eBay? I can't seem to locate one at the moment so if anyone would have the user id to search on it would be great. Seems like someone might have tried the spray on bedliner? Any reports on how that turned out? Any help would be more than appreciated. I'm going to enclose a pic just to make sure I've got the same style cover. Thanks in advance for any help. hi
I have a 1997 sea ray 185 bow rider and I had the same problem(craking engine cover). I had a fiberglass company make a mold from my old cover and have made copies out of fiberglass instead of PVC. Each new cover will run about $650.00 plus shipping. The new covers will not have the padding inside as the old pvc had but looks great. You need to save all the hardware and use it again. I can send you photos of the new cover.
It's been a long time since you posted this but I am wondering if you still offer the this? I tried lookingyou up on eBay as well. I have some cracks on my 190 engine cover. Email me at duckslayer3302@live.com

Hello all, brand new to the forum. My wife and I purchased a 1997 185 in December and have the same problem as everyone else. I am in the process of trying a repair myself. I spent the day yesterday sanding the whole cover down and using JB Weld Plastic welder to fill the cracks. I let it set up and sanded the areas down. So for so good. My next step is going to be using the stuff you see on the infomercials, "Flex Seal" spray that we found in white, to cover the entire thing. I will post before and after pictures to show you how it came out.

Just joined this forum because I saw this thread and I'm having the same problem. Granted, mine looks nothing like all of the others above but I can see the cracks starting...

Is it still possible to buy a new fiberglass one?

Are you still looking for the cover?

I actually found someone on e-bay that has a mold and making them in IL

I just found him also. Talked with him today. Nice guy. He sells them for $450 plus shipping. If you’re not that far, it would be to your advantage to pick it up. Good luck.

I cant seem to find him on Ebay Any more. Is he still making them. If so do you happen to have his contact information.

His name is Nick and his number is 708-790-4150. I talked to him last fall. He is located in Oak Lawn, IL. Tell him Fred Jurinek from Mokena said Hi.

Brad, my 97 185 has the same crack issues as yours. Your finished picture looks great.

(1) sand the whole cover - Did you sand by hand or with an orbital sander, and which grits did you start and end with? 80 to 150? Did you try to make a v-shaped grove for the JB product to fill or just fill after sanding?

(2) fill cracks with JB Weld Plastic welder, let set up, final sanding - Did you use this J-B Weld 8237 PlasticWeld Plastic Repair Expoxy Putty? Was the syringe application straightforward? Any issue with shrinkage after drying and having to re-apply?

Sound like steps 1 and 2 took a day for you to complete.

(3) is this the white "Flex Seal" spray you used? Flex Seal White Aerosol Spray Rubberized Coating Did you have any issues with the spray building up to thick or dripping? Some of the YouTube videos show the spray as pretty thick and can run. How is the rubberized coating holding up with people and gear bumping against it? Any issues with keeping it clean?

Hello, brand new to the forum. My wife and I just purchased a 1997 190 and now have the same problem as everyone else. Been a little while since the last post, but is anyone aware if the gentleman in IL is still selling replacement covers, or if self-repair is the only option? Mine looks very similar to Brad's photos above. Thanks for any help!!
