Anyone have a leaky trunk? The aft storage compartment in my boat (aka, Trunk) isn't water tight. Yesterday, I hooked up dock water to a cartridge filter installed right before the water hookup. The hose to the filter wasn't tight and (unbeknownst me at first) there was a steady drip of water into the main storage truck. I never noticed until a few hours later, while working in the bilge, I noticed drips of water coming down the back transom wall. When I discovered the leak at the hose, I turned off the hose, soaked up all the water in the trunk, and the dripping in the bilge stopped.

So, now I want to reseal the trunk. I'm thinking about pouring a thin layer of epoxy on the floor of the trunk and then priming and painting. Thoughts? Anyone else have this issue?

...my trunk is only leaky...erm..never mind we were talking boats! :)

Thanks, Frank. That's definitely something to consider. I will take a closer look next time I'm down there. I cringe at the thought of even suggesting this, BUT, considering the point you make, maybe a less permanent fix would be a can or two of flex seal (I can't believe I'm even suggesting this).

EDIT: or barrier coat. Maybe that would be the better option.

Cwiert,
I had a leak behind the fresh water hookup. It turns out to be a pressure reducer that was installed on the inside of the panel. A pain to get to, but I removed it and just went with the reducer inside the trunk.

So I have had a leak in a way. I would suggest fixing the leak and not worrying about sealing. I have water that will splash up into the shore cable hole while underway, so the trunk gets wet frequently. I like that the water has somewhere to go.

I am wondering if I can get some opinions on boot striping, or lack of boot stripes. We have been working on the boat this past week. I on the inside, impellers, exhaust hoses, finishing plumbing on galley sink overboard, etc and she has been removing the boot stripes in preparation to move our bottom paint about 2 or 3 inches higher on the hull sides as we are tired of the scum line we get from the paint not being high enough.
Today, after pulling the tape off, she cleaned the side up a little with some acetone to get the rest of the glue off and she called me to come look at the side of the boat. She thinks that she likes the look of the boat better without the stripes and wants my opinion. After seeing it cleaned up, I have a tendency to agree. I am leaning toward moving the paint up the 2 or 3 inches and going without the stripes. There is practically no "shadow" in the gelcoat from the stripes. I am sure I can wheel out what shadow is there, and the paint will cover most of the area anyways. I know it's a personal thing, but I don't recall seeing any Sea Rays with out the stripes before and I guess if I decide I don't like it, we can put them on at the next haul out, I already bought the stripes. What say you?

Wow Mark. No ghosting. That's nice. If I were to pull mine off, there'd be a noticeable nice shiny strip of raised virgin gelcoat.

I am a one solid boot stripe guy. I wish I could pull off the thin gold stripe and just leave the solid black stripe. That's my preference, for what it's worth.

Think I'm with Bill on this one. I used to think I liked a clean side but I think a simple stripe accents the boat nicely. I'm not a fan of the large swooping decal they used on the dancers in '98

Kind of a dumb question....but what is the difference in using fresh water pump 1 and fresh water pump 2? Either one seems to give me great pressure. Im also wondering if there is away to use the pump to increase the presure from the dock waterline, without using the fresh water holding tank. Thank you.

Use either one. They are just two pumps in parallel that would give you twice the flow if you have both on. Much like two batteries in parallel gives twice the current. I find one pump is good enough for two faucets on at once. After that having both on would be beneficial. The are supposed to sense when to come on. So theoretically only one should actual turn on for low demand even if power is on to both. But I've never tried to figure out those exact settings on the pump to make all that sensing ideal.

The pumps pull directly from the tank. The shore water taps into the water line after the pumps. So you can't do what you want to do.

Thank you Bill. Been living on the boat, so I use a little more water then most.

Be aware of using dock water directly
Very possible busting your plumbing connections as dock water presser exceeds the water presser from bust pumps
Most boats sinking at dicks is due to busted plumbing lines
Have a great boating

I'm in the "keep the boot stripe" camp. I removed mine a few years back, and changed to color from green / greenish silver to black / silver, and moved the waterline too. Very happy with the results with minimal ghosting.

I completely removed the wheelhouse stripes, and like the clean look.

Genny and noise update.

The westerbeke was really noisy outside the boat (the exhaust note). I changed out the tiny muffler with a 12" Centek (Model 1500120 - 2" in / out) water lift and wow, what a difference. The exhaust sound is minimal (I can now hear the water splashing). The noise from the genny through the floor is now the dominant sound.

The installation, required some wrestling (removed for access) of the main exhaust, and a re route of the water pump pex tube. I was able to use the existing exhaust hardwall hoses.

Overall, quite happy.

It looks like a seat for an inflatable dinghy.
Thanks for the quick reply. I will see if it will work on my West Marine dinghy.

Also, when I had the choice to redo the boot stripe after my paint job this winter I went with a single stripe. To me it looks cleaner. I also removed the wheel house stripes.

Do you have any pictures of the process. I am not happy with my Gen noise and was looking at options. How hard was the main exhaust removal? I had a survey done last fall and the only thing left to address is my Generator exhaust tubes. Thanks

I doubled up my mufflers. First I increased the size to a 12x12 and then I added one inline as well. I can finally stand my westerbeke.

I'll snap pics the next I'm down at the boat. The exhaust removal can be hard, but I found removing the elbow off the hull then breaking the seal off the muffler, along with spraying 656 worked best.

Interesting, where did you cram all the mufflers? Did you need to reroute the water ? Do you have a pic?

I put this in its own thread a while ago, but if you haven't seen that thread, here is the perforated film I put on the outside of the side windows. It blocks most of the view to the inside and reflects the sun, but you can see out perfectly fine. I am toying with the idea of covering the entire front windshield with it.

Where do you purchase this?
