Looking to retire in a few years and collectively we decided to relocate to SC when the time comes. We enjoy coastal living and are looking for an area to move to that is similar to the south shore of Long Island with protected bays and coves and plenty of restaurants on the water to visit. Anyone familiar with Long Island that can point to some SC communities we might look at?

we are in the process of looking now as we plan on heading south in about 2 years. we looked at Southport NC. it looks like a nice area right on the IC

Charleston, SC should be considered.....

My current plan is coastal NC in 3 years.

As an Ex New Yorker, now living on the NC coast, I would recommend getting a little further south. We have great springs thru fall, but really have 4 months of cold and damp weather. My joke has always been " I got off I-95 too soon "

Well just got back from a SC visit looking at potential locations along the coast. Started up around Little River and finished right around Charleston since we only had a few days. We'll explore the areas south of Charleston next trip. I wasn't overly fond of the Myrtle, North Myrtle area but I was very impressed with all of the development and the feel in Summerville. Some very nice active communities being developed and though it is not on the coast, 30 minutes drive to a marina is no problem. Living on the water these past few years has been amazing but I'm getting tired of the constant worry about every storm and the ever changing flood insurance rules/rates every time there is a major storm anywhere in the country. Loved downtown Charleston.

my son and his family live in the Charleston area (West Ashley) so we have been there many times.....so many different types of entertainment and great boating in all of the rivers and coastal areas.....I doubt you will find a higher concentration of wonderful restaurants than Charleston....I bet you could eat at a different restaurant every night for a few years.....and most have excellent quality food....some of the best restaurants are the ones only the locals know of....

I’ve been to Charleston and love it. I’d love to run my boat down there next winter and go back and forth for a week or so each month then run back up to Long Island in the Spring.
Friends bought a house in Blufton this past year and go back and forth from Long Island every month or so. It’s a 55 and over community. Sun City. We haven’t been there yet but they love it and said there are Marinas about 20 minutes away. They also like the availability of cheap frequent flights from NY to Savannah (20 minutes from them) on Jet Blue. They often point out that there are lots of Long Islanders that have resettled there as another positive thing for them.
I’m not particularly attracted to the 55 and over thing, it’s not for me, and I don’t consider a concentration of relocated Long Islanders as a major selling point, but they really like it.

My daughters roommate is from there and we’ve gotten to know her family these last few years. Incredibly nice people, and I get the sense that they are mostly representative of the locals.

We moved full time to Beaufort, SC four years ago. The stretch of land between Charleston and Hilton Head is a collection of barrier islands, so there are an abundance protected bays and coves and deepwater creeks that are very private due to the marshes that make up the seaside (meaning there are very few developments/houses right on the water). Plenty of restaurants on the water. Not sure about water access to them in Charleston, but in Beaufort there is a City Marina and a public dock right at the city's waterfront. Dock there and you have a short walk to over a dozen restaurants. In Hilton Head there are restaurants on Skull Creek with docks, but either shallow water or the size of the dock kinda restricts docking to a 25-30' boat. Harbour Town has several restaurants there and you can dock there for a fee. Also, there is free dock space at Freeport Marina on Daufuskie Island (barrier island with only water access) for their restaurants, for any size boat.

Deleted - too much opinion, little facts.

Looking at buying a small house not too far from a dock (also would like to buy). Anyone with local Carolinas knowledge have any advice? I have looked a bit in the Moorhead NC area but now thinking SC might be better -

Wow Bill. I'm impressed with Port Royal! Looks to be a great value down there. The marina looks great too. I'll have to keep that area on my list... Still too many years away right now..

How can I get info? - docks for sale? Can you live aboard? And ‘the real estate, local area info - is there a particular community or organization? Thanks
For this marina liveaboards are allowed but slips aren't for sale. The marina owns all the slips. There are other marinas in the Charleston to Hilton Head stretch where the marina slips are privately owned. Some allow liveaboards, some don't. Message me if you are particularly interested in Beaufort/Port Royal/Hilton Head area.
