It's time to leave Brewer's

So I gather.

Another reason I’m glad I live here. I used to live on Long Island. I’m sure it’s the same there.
 
Those rates are crazy. If I had to pay them I’d probably get out of boating.
Most places close to me on the South Shore of Long Island in eastern Nassau/Western Suffolk are working boatyards with no amenities past electric and water. I think the average price for summer dockage in those type places is about $60.00 a foot for the season. Again, nothing fancy at all. Just a place to dock your boat. There is one dockominium that I know of that is a pretty good deal for owners. It’s not super fancy, but does have some amenities including a pool. I always thought that place was a pretty nice set up.
I opted to buy a piece of property on a canal with a 50’ bulkhead about 10 years ago. It was a bigger initial investment than the dockominium, but my annual costs (about $750 taxes & $400 electric/water) are significantly lower and although there are no amenities, I am the Dockmaster and can do pretty much anything I want.
Between the boat, property, lighting, and picnic table we have set up there it’s a nice place to hang out with friends on summer evenings too.
I was able to store my old boat up on the property during the winters, and the ability to have sheds to keep stuff in is fantastic. Unfortunately, my current boat is a little too big to block up on the land so I’m in a boatyard this winter, but I may opt to stay in the water next year for convenience. I’d just do a Springtime short haul. Lots of the bigger boats on my canal do that.
You may want to consider buying something. Either private property, or a dockominium. There will be an initial investment, but it’s money in the bank because you’re going to be able to get that money back if you ever decide to sell, and you’re annual cost of boat ownership should be considerably lower.
 
I just signed on to Brewer's Pilots Point for 2018. Was able to use the refer a friend deal so saved a little bit. Figured I would give it a try. I have four kids - 16, 14, 12, 10 so I liked the idea of having things to do and maybe they could make some friends. I agree the costs are staggering. I figured I would see if it is worth it or not this season and then decide if we will go back for next season.

I was thinking that perhaps if a few of us got together we could negotiate a package with one of these marinas. I have a 40' Sundancer. For my day job I am a sourcing/procurement negotiator so if anyone is interested, we could agree to a few options and I could approach them and see if we could work out a deal for volume discount so to speak. If a few of us are willing to do a deal, that is a big chunk of change to these places. LMK.

Hey John. Although I'm the originator of this thread and stated it was time to leave brewers, I ended up coming to an agreement with them because of a unique circumstance. I can tell you more about that on the docks.
What dock is your slip? Do you have boys or girls, or both? I have 2 girls...9 and 11 and we are on D dock (right near the fuel dock). It would be great for them to have more kids around the marina to play with.
 
Hi - they recommended me for F34, I wasn't super happy as I was hoping for a better view but they told me the people on F dock were a nice bunch of people. They told me that if there are other open slips I could move to another if desired, but I was not well versed on the pros and cons of the various docks to be able to make a decision. I have the same Caterpillar engines as you. Right now I have the boat at Norwalk Cove Marina having their Cat techs go over everything before the season starts. This is my second boat, my first was also a Bayliner - 3688.

My 16 year old is a girl, the rest are boys which spend most of their time on their tablets/video games or at the pool.

Last year we were at the Guilford Yacht Club which was nice and half the cost but being dockominiums, most of the people there were retired folks, no kids and it was really quiet. Good and bad. Liked the facility, liked the price, but kids were bored. Also at low tide it was a challenge getting in and out as it got pretty shallow and we would kick up lots of silt in the channel. I cringe when thinking of that getting sucked into the engines.

OK, you're only a 9-iron or PW away from me. The F dock crowd seems like friendly folk, but I don't really know them...but they're usually all hanging out having a good time.

This is my 3rd season with this boat. I'm still learning the engines, but I'm happy to (try to) help if you have any questions.

Too bad the kid thing didn't mesh better. No offense, but for the time being, my girls are still more inclined to play with and hang out with other girls. And I'm COMPLETELY fine with that for as long as it lasts. LOL.
 
‘K’ dock all the way. Not too hard to get in an out of and much quieter at night than anything closer to Boom or the gas docks.
 
Brewers Plymouth went from 185 to 200 a foot last year. People were dropping like flies out of there. Their prices keep me out of there as much as my wife wants to be in. I got into Taylor Point last year and at 135 a foot and no headaches about storage or how much money I spend in the shop its amazing. Town owns the marina they just want the slip fees and enjoy your summer.

Does the slip come with "Butler Service"? I thought we were expensive at $74 a foot (dock length not boat length). Includes power/water/secure parking and docks, swimming pool, bath houses, kids parks...

Nope. That's the northeast for ya.
 
Yup... Plymouth is $200 a foot and they charge you for the maximum that the slip can handle. Example, if you have a 33 foot boat but the slip can handle a 40 footer, you're charged as if you have a 40 foot boat - $8,000. Spending that much just to dock your boat for the summer takes all the fun out of it, i'd like to say most are boycotting brewers but there seems to be a plethora of people willing to pay their prices.

that’s just for the slip in the summer, winter is $25/ft wet storage. And if you want to use the pool it’s a $125 summer pass. Electric is metered.
So by the time your year is complete it’s around $11,000 for 5 good months of boating.
Can’t wait to start snowbirding next year.
 
Joe, Has something changed since I stopped boating in the northeast? I don't remember ever having 5 GOOD months! I remember 2 good months, 1 ok month and 2 crappy months!
 
Its amazing coming from florida what it cost to slip a boat up here. Obviously supply and demand makes the market, you would think with this much water there would be more marinas. Another note about brewers, there fuel is .60-$1 more than everyone and last year when the town docks were down they were even higher. Of coarse they offer "member" discounts but they still stick it to ya. There transient prices have gone up as well.

Steve, your probably more realistic than I am I stretch the season from now till nov 1st but your correct most of it is unusable.
Good to hear from you hope all is well I’ll be down there soon, one more winter to get through and I’ll have 12 months of boating.
 
Hmmmm.....

I pay $6000 per year for a slip in Florida. Electric is metered which runs an additional $75/ month on average.

No pool, no wifi, a very poor excuse for a "private bathroom," broken down fixed docks.

Ill be heading down to Florida in the fall as well this year. Looking forward to boating in the south east. We left the SS of LI as well, no water and slips for bigger boats. We are out east in Aquabogue and pay $ 135/ft.

Awesome.... Hopefully we can do some boating together.....Need to get you to the Bahamas. I can't get enough of it. Now we are discussing spending next winter and spring there. We did 2 months last year. On another note, We just rafted with Alex and Dave (Stocks and Blondes) last week in Boca Grande for a few days. Your boat looks great sporting the new navy blue. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate up there soon.... Cheers.
