Just got our slip assignment for diversey harbor for the 2018 season, curious if there are some clubsearay folks around the area. Our 280da is stored in Michigan city Indiana for the winter so I’ll be bringing it across once we’re launched. This will be my first trip across the lake so I’ll be hugging land along the south shore for the first trip unless I can find a buddy boat that is doing the crossing over as well.

Look forward to meeting some Chicago area sea ray folks this summer.

John

Just go straight across, you’ll be within sight of land and radio range at all times. It’s only 37 miles....

We brought our 340 from Michigan City to Belmont Harbor last year when we bought it. Like the above said, you will be able to see the city the whole trip on a straight line, but completely understand hugging the shore also!

Congrats on the new slip!

If I am not at work when you decide to take it across, I could accompany you if like. I'd just need a ride back to Michigan City.....I don't want to spend the $$ to take the 340 across for a day trip (not a fan of Chicago, in fact, I kind of really hate most of it), but if the sea conditions were right, I could also escort you across in my Boston Whaler.

That’s one heck of an offer! Might take you up on that depending on how things are looking on the lake around launch date. Seems like a pretty straightforward run if the weather is good, if it’s not I plan to wait until I have a nice calm day.
Thanks!
John

Shoot...my new 400DB is in Sturgeon Bay and I will be bringing it down to Northpoint Marina at Winthrop Harbor. It about 145 nm. Not bad for a first cruise. Scott do you want to bring the Whaler to Sturgeon Bay to escort me down?
LOL!

I live about a 5 minute walk from Diversey Harbor - send me a note if u need help with anything. When we brought ours back we took the South Shore train out and it worked really well. Plan for a south or southwest wind day and you won’t have any issues. North winds on the south end of the lake get nasty quick. With North or East winds it will get a bit more choppy as you get inside the water treatment facilities until you reach your harbor. Kind of a washing machine effect due to the limited beaches.

I'll fly the plane up there and come down with you on the boat! You'll just need to get me back to my plane. Better yet, I could swing by and pick you up with the plane, fly up there, get your boat with you, and then have you get me back to the plane.

My son is on k dock, he will be glad to help out if you need a hand, it’s a fun place lot to do, great restaurants all over. Like JMD said watch the winds and it will be a great ride.

Appreciate all the responses and tips, We will be on the south facing side of A dock in Diversey for the season. We live just west at Diversey/Ashland, so it will be nice to be so close to the boat. Really looking forward to the ride across and trying to be as prepared as I can be as this will be my first longer cruise with the boat. We took a number of shorter cruises around the Michigan city area last fall and everything went smoothly, so fingers crossed that continues.

I'll be taking my new-to-me 450DA across from Michigan City to Burnham on April 19th weather permitting if you want to tag along. I have made this crossing many times over the years.

Heck, that'd be awesome if you need some crew. Would be a great learning experience for me to tag along with you first prior to making the crossing myself. I'll PM you my info.

Thanks!
John

The extended forecast certainly doesn't look promising for mid-April boating! I hope you guys can pull this off on the 19th. And congrats on your new rigs...

Agreed completely! I think I'll end up looking like I'm going skiing instead of boating. Oh the joys of midwestern weather.

Hey John - I think we met shortly after you bought your boat, just you and your wife right? I'm in slip 39 at B&E, the 340 with 3 kids and the maui mat on the bow.

You may need a snow suit if you still plan on the 19th. Just heard this morning that this is the coldest start to April in over 40 years. Where the hell is that global warming, haha

C-Side, Good to hear from you! you're absolutely spot on! We are scheduled to splash the 29th, so I'm not sure it'd be much better than the 19th, but fingers crossed. Can't believe how cold it's been and really hope that summer steps in quick, or that lake water is going to be ice cold all season (usually is anyway!).

When are you guys going in this year?

Its a nice day out there! - boat not in the water just yet!
Nice? It's 41 degrees with 8-10 foot waves....nice day to be indoors. I did finish the final polish on mine, in theory it will be launched on Monday.

Shrink wrap will come off this week. I'll go up next weekend and buff her out then I can splash. Guessing in 2-3 weeks time. No rush this year....

Our boat is in, heading there today as assuming all is well on a shakedown cruise will be heading over to Chicago this afternoon. Going to be a chilly ride but with 70s this week it’ll be nice to have the boat close to home!
