"What is wrong" was already asked....

Problem here is if the gun I sell is used in a crime I would be the one to do some explaining. I would be the last name on the gun registry. The truly nice thing about being down here is it's 80 something and sunny just about everyday.

It sure is :)

I wouldn't want to sell a gun with it still registered to me. Too much liability for my liking. Even if they can't charge me with anything I still wouldn't want them beating down my door.

boatman, if you lived in WA you would have to get a background check done on the buyer and you'd have a record of the transaction. The state says they don't keep those transaction records, but I trust our state's gubmint about as far as I can throw my boat.

At that point it's no longer a transaction between 2 individuals, you would have to get someone with an FFL involved.
That's an option in Florida as well, but there is a fee involved at that point, and of course the paper work. With a small dollar purchase not worth the expense here.

Mass. has a federal form you can download, fill it out, if the buyer has a FID everything is good and the weapon gets transferred. 5 years ago there was no background check required, not sure about now.

I've been thinking of getting rid of most my guns for a few years now. I've been debating on how to sell them. I'd like to just put an add in the paper and have a 'Guy Stuff' sale. Sometimes I think about taking them to a shop and selling on consignment. I dunno...

Craiglist has a no firearms for sale policy. But people still unload them there, wording it as "personal protection items for sale " call for more info.

Woody, if you sell them yourself I'd suggest you arrange to meet the buyer in a shopping center parking lot or some other public place. I wouldn't want someone I didn't know coming to my home to buy firearms, seeing where I lived, where I kept my guns, what guns I have, etc. .

When you meet the buyer in a shopping center parking lot, have a wingman parked nearby who can keep an eye on the transaction to make sure you don't walk into a robbery situation where he becomes the robber and you become the "robbee".

Also, something to think about---what if the buyer shows up and he's not someone you want to sell a gun to, ie, a junkie or gangster? How are you going to handle telling him "no" when he gets mad because you made a deal over the phone and now you're backing out of the deal? That's where you want your wingman to be nearby.

A safer move would be to take them to a gun store and put them on consignment.

Our local Police Departments have an area set up for these type of transactions. Not just for weapons but any high dollar transactions where you would like a neutral meeting spot. Thieves aren't going to meet you at the PD so you weed out a lot of potential risks that way.

I have lots of guy stuff that's not needed/used anymore, including some guns. It'd make a good 'guy yard sale', around here those are social events. I was thinking more of the time and work that goes into the sale. It's interesting that you were thinking of gangsters and wingmen, ....the result of urbanization? I don't know, but it reminds me how much I like living in an area that has more deer per square mile than people.

I think that's why I have such a love for the water and will always own a boat... I can get my People to Dolphin ratio in check ;)

You're probably spot on with your assessment of my urban life vs your very rural life. Most of the time I've gotten rid of a gun it has gone to my son, but those were years ago. I can't think of many people (outside of my close neighbors and circle of friends) who I would want coming to my home. And yes, we have "gangstas" in our town.

Hmmm....last week these kids were eating Tide pods. This week they are gun experts

The bad thing is that most the adults with similar views don't know what they're talking about either. This is an example that always irritates me. They actually outlaw this in some areas, they call it an 'assault rifle'. This .30 carbine isn't mine but I have one in excellent shape.

It is very difficult to have a rational discussion on the gun issue when the anti-gun side, including activists, politicians, and their friends in the media, knows so little about what they are talking about. Their are so many major failings to understand the guns they wish to ban it would create a hilarious skit if it issue was not so important.
