I want to change the fluid in my V drives this year....they hold 3 qts. of Dexron III ATF each.....I can't find any ATF locally that is labeled just plain ole Dexron III but I see some brands of ATF that claim their ATF is compatible with transmissions requiring Dexron III....what I don't know is if these brands also contain additives that may be harmful to my V drives...

I don't want to put the wrong fluid in the tranny so can anyone tell me what ATF they have used in their V drives?......

Thanks...

GM vehicles that originally called for DEXRON III have been changed and GM recommends DEXRON VI.

There was a technical service bulletin 04-07-30-037C
On this. Google the bulletin number and you will see the information GM included regarding DEXRON VI. It’s from 2007.

Perhaps the manufacturer of your V-Drives has issued a similar bulletin? Give them a call and see.

NAPA used to offer a DEX-III. been a couple years since i got some to service a boat trans. I do recall seeing a statement from one trans/v-drive manufacturer that stated they preferred the use of DEX-III rather then the updated API. I t was in older correctcraft boats.

Castrol...Transmax...Dex/Merc. It's the old Dex 3, not compatible with Dex 4

Correct, Dex IV and Dex V would definitely not be compatible. Dex VI possibly is a compatible alternative, but further verification from the manufacturer is needed.

thanks for all the replies gentlemen....

For you guys with ZF transmissions, ZF has published a list by brand and trade name for acceptable fluids for each of their transmission types. I posted it a couple of times so you might try searching the site here for it. The post contains a link to the ZF publication.

Hello,

I got mobil 320 ATF Dex lll premium oil for my ZF 63 IV V-drives.

This oil is ZF 04D compatible IF you look at the specs.
