340 SUNDANCER THREAD

Wow, this is a great thread! I bought my 08' 340 DA 2 years ago. I have several questions for all the brain trust here...

1- Batteries, I have 4 , two year old batteries and when I anchor to Perch fish, I can't run the radio long (in addition to head, fridge etc running). Has anyone added more batteries to increase longevity? I do have a Genny, but its noisy during the peace of fishing. I also notice battery drainage when trolling at low RPM (below 700)... is that normal?

2- Anyone add reel/pulley system for running big boards? Ideas on mounting them to the arch?

3- Anyone use an Anchor Ball so you may anchor off the stern? Windless on the bow is fine, but the boat swings a bunch in the wind.
Thanks for any and all help.

I don't think you have a quantity of batteries problem. Adding another likely won't help. If you can notice a change in battery behavior at low RPM's I'm betting you have a problem with your alternator(s). It's not normal to see a change at idle/no-wake. I'd suggest you get those checked ASAP before you wreck your relatively new batteries.

With four properly charged and properly cared for batteries you should be able to go for 2+ days with two fridges, radio, head, etc. running.

With all of the above said I suppose it would be worth asking what size batteries you put in 2 years ago? Are the group 27's at least?

I read a post about replacing the factory alternators, but lost it and did not write down the details. I do have DEKA 27M6 batteries. I had a thorough survey and some work done - I would have thought someone would have caught the alternator issue. I will have to look into that more as soon as weather breaks and I can get in the water. Thank you.

My set up is 2 Deka 27s on House/port, single 27 on Star, and a 27 starting for genny. I am about to replace the Star with a 31 as it’s dead after my charger took a dump.

But for example, both fridges running, and water and head. The house par runs all day and night and will normally still fire up the port motor.. the star is normally fine. As it’s not running much or it was not. This year with new stereo. It mite...

Something to note, these boats suck on separation. The house side runs all the cabin stuff... but the star runs stereo, and everything st the dash... so it’s possible to kill both sides

Yes they do! I have two fish finders/chart plotters, a tv mounted near the live well that feeds from the fish finder, the stereo and of course the windless is off that same Starb. battery. That's why I thought maybe I needed another.

hello there, I would suggest looking at your batteries, if they are serviceable and see how much acid is in them. I have found in the past that a good battery can't hold a good charge without proper acid level. Good luck

Awfully quite in the ole 340 thread. Has our hull officially lost favor with the masses? Or are all of us 340 poor suckers living north of the Mason Dixon?

Already looking forward to spring. 4-5 weeks of "real winter" and I'm done with this crap. Looking forward to another year with our 340.
hey neighbor, we're in the same frame of mind. I've been at the storage area in Sandusky Ohio at least twice in the past few weeks to sit and day dream of the day we go back in the water on lake Erie. We purchased our '02 340 last year upgrading from a 4 winns 278 and man what a difference. Just joined this forum and pretty cool.

Has anyone replaced the cockpit fridge in a 340? I need to replace mine and looking for suggestions thanks!
when you say the cockpit fridge, you mean the one top side? If so, You have to pull the exterior wall and doors off to get it out. If you try to with out moving them they'll get tore up.

So where could I find a spare storage locker door? The one under the passenger bench at the helm....

Any ideas? Just need the door.
If you call or email sea ray at 1-800-srboats or www.searay.com and give them your HIN they can send you a new one or tell you of a dealership that may be able to help ya.

Thanks, i have since cut my factory door how I wanted and if I ever need a soild one I will remake one.

I have an '01 and have removed mine 2 or 3 times and did not have to remove anything to get mine out. Just remove the 4 screws holding the trim and then the fridge will pull right out with plenty of room.

Greetings all. In January I picked up a new to me 2000 340 Sundancer DA with 7.4 MPI's. Engines have about 600 hrs and generator has 495. Overall it was in decent shape but needed some TLC. I have had to make some repairs, but now I'm in the process of doing all the routine maintenance to get everything to a baseline. Im pretty DIY capable. So far I have replaced the AC, engine rotors, distributor caps, impellers, fuel water separators, oil and filters. I have also tuned up the genny with new rotor, cap, plugs, impeller, fuel filter, and zinc. During the survey all the exterior zincs were also replaced. The boat is kept in freshwater.

So I am now looking to the group for any other suggested maintenance I may have overlooked. Also, this boat still has the log style mufflers with 3" spacers between the risers and manifolds, so I have started to look into replacing them with water lift units. Any suggestions on where to relocate the batteries? I saw the rebuild where they were placed in mid berth, but this looks beyond my ability. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I have the water lift mufflers and have two batteries between the motors, bottom of the bilge and the third is located on the "shelf" between the mufflers. My generator battery is directly in front of the generator which I assume is standard.

Getting the batteries on the bilge floor in and out is a truly wonderful experience...

i have two batteries wired in parallel located on a shelf behind (closer to the transom) of the engines and between the water lift mufflers.....this battery bank is the 'house battery bank' and also starts starboard engine....the genny battery is located in front of the genny....the port engine starting battery is located in front of the hot water heater.....

you may already know but the conversion to water lift mufflers is relatively expensive...I believe the cost of the mufflers alone are around $700 each but you might can find used ones....

welcome to CSR and good luck with the 'new' boat....we really do like and enjoy ours......

This is Intresting.. mine is a 2002.

The 2 battery’s in between the mains in the bottom of the bilge is my house bank in parallel. For the port motor.... then I have 2 on the shelf between the water lift mufflers.. in most forward being the starboard motor, and the one most aft is the Genny battery.

The area in front of the genny is open and a very useful spot to stand and work on genny or starboard motor.

I don't think I would like any batteries being located directly on the bilge floor.....my concern would be if/when the primary bilge pump fails to operate while water is coming in by the time the high water bilge pumps kicks in the water level may be over the top of the battery....

just a thought...

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Cliff, I agree that being low in the bilge could cause problems if you start taking on water. However, I hate to give up the spot in front of the genny and water heater due to fact that they are prime spots for working on things, but I guess my options are limited. How pressing is replacing the mufflers. Is it a drop everything and get these done now or is it something I can budget for later in the year? Are there any others out there that are just trucking along with their log mufflers without incident?

If the water gets to the tops of the batteries on the bilge floor I think you'll have bigger problems to consider dealing with (ie grab your ditch bag and a case of beer and get in the water?). If I remember correctly there is a rib running down the center line of the boat. So I believe...can't be 100% though...that the batteries are a few inches above the bottom of the floor. Either way that's a lot of water....

if the engines are 18 years old and have 600 hrs. I would say the conversion can wait a while....are these the original engines?.....if not the original engines may have been replaced due to water ingestion and you may be 'on borrowed time' on these engines until they also suffer from water ingestion....you can check for signs of water ingestion by removing the spark plugs and using a flexible endoscope to examine the condition of the combustion chamber and valves....if there are no signs of water ingestion such as rust on the valves that is a good thing....

If you have the spacers, motor have 600 on them..to me that’s a “we run the boat till it’s a problem or not a problem ever” kinda deal.

Their should be resonators in exhaust tubes
. This image is for through the transom exhaust but shows the plastic pieces and distances they should be in Tubes. You should see a hose clamp on the outside of tube holding it in place on the inside of tube if you have these.
