40 sedan bridge forum

Reading these threads makes me want to time capsule forward two weeks. We don't take delivery of our "new to us" until then so I'm having to be patient. Luckily our new purchase is very clean and updated with one exception... No ICE MAKER!!! yes, folks, it's true, I will have to harken back to my younger days and get a few of the old-fashioned trays and make homemade ice. I would like to add one to the cockpit starboard side just outside the sliding door. But the hubs is reluctant to cut holes even for the water line. I'm guessing it shouldn't be too difficult in fact, I understand some of the new ice maker machines don't event require a drain - they mention just a 1/4"
tube (i assume this is to drain)????

Congrats! Many of us don't have an ice maker. Mine had the small cockpit fridge option rather than the ice maker. It rusted out and I threw it out and put a door in its place to use the area under the bridge steps for storage. 4 Ice cube trays are working just fine for us.

One idea some follow is to make no modifications for a year to see how they use the boat. Pretty much what I did (took me more like three years to figure out what I wanted to change).

Yes I have the Garmin camera as a cockpit/rearview camera and an additional camera in the ER. Both are hooked up to the master tv, and the bridge electronics

That's what I'd like to do on ours but I also want to be able to access the camera remotely for security (at least the exterior cam). Arlo Go is one that runs on rechargeable batteries, completely wireless and has it's own sim card (so I won't need the shotty wifi at our marina). Granted it's $10/month on our At&t plan but I'm ok with this for a security camera. They retail at $400 ea. Kinda pricey so I'm still exploring other options before I bite.

That's EXACTLY what the hubs said (sound advice)

Measure 27 times, cut once. It only hurts for a minute!

Our 0744DB has a Tappan Micro/Conv oven and we love it. So far we have cooked pizza, biscuits, toast, and microwave anything. It works great!

My stateroom depth repeater is all wired up and working. I got lucky and did not have to run any wire. I used an old disconnected radio remote wire to get the signal from the helm to the salon. Then connected that end to the telephone wire that ran to the stateroom. I long ago took out my telephone jacks and replaced them with extra 110v outlets.

So should I permanently mount it on the black filler board below the TV or drill a hole in the cabinet between the top outlet and CO detector, and flush mount it there? First one is reversible as I can just replace the filler board should I remove the display. Second is a permanent hole that will look like it was an intended factory install.

I would go black filler board. Once you cut into that vitricor, it's forever, and who knows how long that repeater will work or become obsolete. This sounds ridiculous, but I'm still dying to know how that TV plugs in. I have still yet to find an outlet in that factory TV cubby. Mine is plugged in where your iphone chargers are.

This is inside the cabinet. Looks factory to me but could be previous owner added it when they pulled the factory analog TV. Would be super easy to add. Just daisy chain off the existing outlet.

A(nother) quick question... does anyone know where I can get awning track in lengths greater than 8'?... Sailrite sells it in 90" lengths (https://www.sailrite.com/Flex-A-Rail-White-90), but I need 10' for half the stern and port side of the cockpit canvas. Thanks in advance.

Simon
Just in case anyone’s interested, I called my local Sea Ray Agent, Marine Max, (now THERE’S a radical thought!?) and they can get hold of a 20’ length of awning track for about $25 inc shipping to my home, who knew... should be here in 5 business days, fingers crossed!

Trying to do my bit for this great forum!

Cheers,
Simon

I have a 400 Sedan Bridge so I am not sure if your layout is the same, but I installed an ice maker on the port side under the steps on my boat. The hatch originally had a freezer installed and I changed it out for an icemaker (The freezer quit working). The water line was easy since there is already a hole in the floor to the engine room behind the old freezer. I split the faucet in the engine room with a simple garden hose faucet splitter and ran the hose from the splitter through the hole in the floor to the back of the ice maker, which has a garden hose size connector. It was a tight squeeze to get the ice maker in, but it fit. I had to make some minor hole modifications to the original wooden trim inside the hatch which held the freezer, but overall it was a simple conversion. The icemaker does not make ice fast, but it is convenient. Congrats on the boat. I love my 400.

the previous owner has already installed a small fridge in that space but maybe I can add one on the stb side (directly facing where yours is) probably be the same install using the ER faucet with your splitter. I'll have the boat in our slip soon so I'll research it then.

That's exactly where mine is, 2003. I'm still dragging my feet on deciding how to mount the new tv.

I made a 90 degree "L" out of 2x6 w/ a couple of steel angle braces from the hardware store to hold it stiff. About 16x16. I painted it all black, and screwed the horizontal piece to the floor of the existing TV cubby. I mounted an articulating arm to the vertical piece with all of it pushed back in just enough for the articulating arm to tuck within the original opening when folded, and make the tv look like a flush mount with the cabinet face. The arm tilts, rotates, and is able to be pulled out and turned, to face the bed.

Hey everyone - been looking at buying a 400 Sedan Bridge for a while now. I found one that has CAT C7's in it. I cant find any other 400 that has those engines. I called Sea Ray and it came with 3126B's and were replaced under warranty with the C7's. Question I have for the folks here. Any thoughts on the C7? Anyone heard of a C7 in a 400 before? its a 2002 model and has about 700 hours on the C7's Any thoughts would be helpful

I have never seen a 400DB where a buyer chose the 3126 option. You are probably looking at one of a kind with the C7. fwebster is the resident CAT expert on here. If he doesn't see this and respond in a few days try starting a new thread in the Diesel Engines section.

The C-7 is the replacement engine in Caterpillar's line for the 3126/ 350hp application. C-7's were used because there are no more new 3126's. The Cat C series is significantly further down the technology path that the 3116/3126 which are mechanical engines. You can have problems with any diesel engine, but the Cat C engines are typically Caterpillar….i.e. bullet proof.

And, yes, there are a few 3126 400DB's, but there aren't many for a couple of reasons: The 400 was first offered at a time when dealers sold everything as soon as the boats hit the showroom. Sea Ray was only taking 400 orders if there was a signed sales contract attached to the order form. This was the latest and best executed sedan in this size class that SR ever offered and it was a hot seller that every dealer wanted on his lot. Most dealers handled the pre-sold requirement by getting a customer to agree to have his name used in this manner so the dealer could get at least 1 inventory boat. Eventually, and for the first year or so this was the way most 400's were sold. Since they were destined for a dealers showroom, most had very few options and the 3126 was kind of expensive for a little performance boost.

ANd the cost for the 3126 option is the other reason we don't see many. IN actual practice, even thought they have a larger displacement and develop a few more horsepower, the torque surge on the 350 hp 3116 and the 420hp 3126 are nearly identical up to about 23-2400 rpm, which is recommended cruise speed. That means you really only take advantage of the added hp on the 3126 after you get to an RPM range that is above where you should be running the engines anyway. So, most experienced buyers just didn't spend the extra $8-$10K for the 3126 option.
