WTB - Oil Extractor - Power vs Manual - Suggestions Please.

I have even gone back to changing my own car oil, Lexus wants upwards of $200 for an oil change
My Lexus at the dealer is $225...my wife's Mercedes GLS450 is $460 at the dealer...crazy. Both get changed at NAPA for less than half of that... The boat has Reverso so it is an easy DIY.

I caught Firestone not changing the filter once (I have this bad habit of writing the hrs/miles/date on my filters). The pump you buy will pay for itself the first time you use it and you will know things are done right.

After my car warranty was up, I stopped letting the dealer change the oil and went to a quick change place for half the price. Soon after I saw some oil under the car. I checked it out and saw that they had re-installed only every-other screw on the underside cover. I took the cover off and found the oil filter was loose! Later I found they hadn't used a washer on the plug. No-one else has touched that car since!

I called Jabsco way back when the cheaper one (rectangular container) crapped out on me to see about getting replacement parts for the pump and they told me those weren’t serviceable.
Not sure if that has changed over the years.
Anyway, before buying, I verified with them that the pump on their more expensive model (round container) would be serviceable if I ever had a problem and they assured me that it would be so I went with that one.
I think I’ve had it for about 10 years now and so far I haven’t had any problems with it at all. It probably only gets used about 7 or 8 times a year though.
If you only do one or two motors a years the cheap Harbor Freight/Northern Tool manual pump might suit your needs just fine. A friend of mine uses one and it works well for him.

Some of those oil change places are a nightmare.
A close friend just retired and closed down his auto repair business last year. He had many customers who came in with oil leaks from loose filters and cross threaded drain plugs after going to those places.
I lease cars every 3 years for my wife and I to drive daily. The dealer I’ve gotten them from the last two times offers free oil changes for the first year and then $7.00 oil changes after that. The catch is you have to make an appointment and hang around while they do it.
I don’t take advantage of it.
We’ve got 4 other cars in the household between the two toys I have in the garage and my two kids cars.
I find it much quicker and easier to just set up the Ramps and knock out all 6 cars one after the other. Once I’m set up, I can do all 6 in less time than it would take me to drive to the dealer, wait for them to do one car, and then drive home again.

There's a cover plate over my impeller housing, so it looks to be serviceable, if only I could find an replacement impeller. That big brass pump looks to be a significant improvement.

Do you let it run dry? When I start to hear it suck air, I hold a few fingers over the coverplate. When it gets too warm, I bump the motor into reverse just long enough to get some oil back to the impeller.

It's final job was sucking cold oil. It was taking so long that i walked away and the impeller overheated and gave up. It never lost a blade, but is too weak to pull any suction.

I bought my 410 from Marine Max last year and took delivery from them in April. The mechanic was a great guy and when we were going over some stuff in the bilge he pointed out that he had to rebuild the Reverso pump prior to delivery. He suggested that I use it to take the old hot oil out of the motors, but if at all possible I should think about pouring the new cold oil in manually to prolong the life of the pump. Sounded like a great idea, so that’s what I did. I ordered one gallon jugs of Rotella from Walmart for in store pick up so they worked out to be the same price as buying it in 5 gallon jugs and they were easier to handle for pouring it in.

yes..... and it also got old and fell apart.

I don’t change my own oil - plus I have the integrated Reverso system on engines/transmissions/generator. BUT - I do carry the Moeller vacuum pump (which is what West Marine rebranded with their name on it) on board. It is very handy for multiple projects beyond oil changes. I use it for getting occasional water out of hard to reach areas in the bilge, getting water out of the shower sump for the annual cleaning, sucking up fuel that I spilled during a filter change, etc. I guess my point is think beyond using this for just oil changes when you are choosing the best option for your needs.

I'm with Bill Collector on the Jabsco pump and replacement impeller.

LD - I gave mine to the new owner of my 410 on C Dock - you might just borrow his...

The mercruiser hand pump that threads onto the dipstick is all i use.
Drains the motor in less than 2 minutes. $35.00
My Generator has a drain hose that i put into a jug to drain.
Your Gen should have a drain hose on it.

I was busy one week and had the place at M59 and Grosbeck do an oil change and they forgot the oil. I feel your pain.

This is a great one! You see these used on craigslist from time to time on the cheap. It is the best one hands down

Well this was fun.

I went with the top sider. Slow but effective.

Book says there's 5.5 qts and the sucker took out 5 qts.

Is there a trick to removing the oil filters without oil going everywhere?

Unscrew the remote oil filter slowly and allow the oil to drain out before removing.

This. Unscrew it enough to where air will go in, but oil won't come out. It will look like the oil is "breathing" in the gap between the filter and the mount.

PS: Put "EFI" in your engine signature.

Do you think just puncturing the oil filter with a nail on top would allow enough air to enter to allow the oil to drain out?

That can work, but then you essentially have a "hole" on both ends of the filter. If there's no hole on the top side (when installed), then you can put it back in it's box and it won't leak through the box with residual leaking. Long ago, I used to do it that way. But unscrewing is more efficient. I still stuff a few rags under the filter mount as a precaution, but in the couple dozen oil changes I do each Fall, it's a "clean" event.

Thanks for adding the "EFI" - reason is, I bet Barker thought you had carb'd engines. With a carb'd engine, the filter is in it's normal location, down low on the block.

Good call.

Since this was the first time doing oil maintenance next time I'll have a bit more patience with the oil filter. On engine number one I had some rags but not enough in the right place ....... doing engine number 2 was a bit cleaner.

Today I'm going after the generator. Should be fun if I can fit. :)o_O:)o_O
