Official 280 Sundancer Thread

Sorry to break it to you but that rig is about as unsafe as it can get. No, it is not OEM, and the rubber hose with single clamps and the plastic doo hicky looks like a fuel leak and explosion waiting to happen. I'd recommend losing the rubber hose and installing proper metal tubing and brass ferrule threaded connectors.

Hi and thanks for the concern. I bought my 280 brand new from my local Searay dealer back in '04 and have been the only owner from day 1. The rubber fuel line & filter are OEM. The photo I posted previously has my winterization bypass kit hooked up and is not how I run. This photo is the proper setup to clarify.

Sorry I should have been clearer. The hose being rubber/plastic is not my concern. The single hose clamp on each end, as well as the valve(?, USCG Marine Spec?) was what bothers me. A single clamp on a gasoline line is at risk of coming loose. Yes I know it is perfectly acceptable in an automotive application, but then car engine compartments drain and won't allow gas to puddle and create an enclosed space explosion risk. I seem to recall as little as a cup of gas if atomized in an enclosed space has enough explosive force to turn a 280 into fiberglass dust, or a 30' diameter fireball, you can pick your own image. Seems like quite a risk to save a couple of minutes extra work in the fall.

I don't see the fuel solenoids in your pic, looks like the fuel line is coming directly from the tank. So you have this small filter in line before your CF3 filter ?

And the guy with twins has 2 of these filters ?

I have one filter for each engine, before the fuel water separation filter on the engine. Apparently this is an original OEM install on 5.0 engines

The fuel solenoid/shut off/water trap is out off sight. In the picture in post 5801 if you follow the bonding wires to the left that is approximately where that stuff is. There is a shelf that is above the fuel tank that the viewer is looking down on and that is covering the plumbing that has exited the fuel tank.

Well not on mine or several others as well. Question is why ? What would be the purpose of this small filter before a much larger and more efficient one. Doubt its even on the Merc parts lookup site. What's your engine number ?

I found this old posting from 'charterchapman'.

"changing the inline fuel filters. This would apply to ~'01 to ~late ‘05’s/~early '06 8.1s without the latest cool fuel module."

"Changing the Inline Filter. The Mercruiser P/N # is 35-864572."

Anyone not using their cockpit cover? Looking to buy a black one.
FYI, most likely, you'll need to relocate all, if not most, of the female snaps. If that's not for you, just try a local upholsterer that's familiar with boat covers to make one for you - in a big town like Chicago, there's got to be at least a few of them. Besides, that way you can likely come up with a better system to seal around the arch.

In need of help!!!! 2005 280 Sundancer twin 5.0 MPI “0W337011” ..... so both my outdrives use to only come up with the trailer button... now for some reason only my port side comes up with the trailer button.... I took the starboard side trim pump off boat replaced both selonoides took tank off cleaned it hooked pump up to a battery pump worked great put pump back on boat and nothing.... I have new trim hockey pucks on gimbal ring.... thoughts anyone???

More than likely, the sensor on the port side, if new, needs adjusting. It is called the trim limit and it is not letting the OD move.

Anyone replace the garboard drains? The upper one is seized and i just might have to replace the whole thing. Anyone know what size it is?

They are a standard size. If you look around and find one that looks like it, it is it.

But... do you know that one of the "screws" is actually a through bolt and a bonding wire is attached? That's going to be awful hard to get to in a narrower beam boat with twin engines. I'm not there to look at it, but you might need to remove one of the engines. "Maybe" you can get to it by removing things on one of the shelf and attacking it from the side... maybe.

Seized... that is pretty darn rare. I'd do anything I can to get it unstuck (maybe you just need to turn harder?), before replacing anything. Try something white vinegar and PB Blaster.

Wow, ok I'll try harder. Might just drill it out in that case. Thanks

Save that till the VERY last step. You should be able to get it out since it's bronze - and bronze, itself, is very salt resistant. Soak it in the vinegar or a brand such as Salt Away - even wrap a soaked towel around it or create a dam so the solution stays in contact with the threads. Then turn harder... maybe a bigger wrench?

You can also try tapping the plug to try and shock whatever is in there loose. You can tap pretty hard - but note I didn't say whack it with all your might.

I have to ask... are you sure you're going lefty-loosey? :)
