Drone pics...

Nice pics.

Is that the Venice inlet?

Planning to be there Friday. Staying at Crows Nest.

Is the second picture right before you get to the marina? or is it further up?

Mark.. yes Venice Inlet, Snake Island.. love it there! great place to sandbar when it is windy like yesterday! really nice on incoming tide, not so when the river dumps out tannin water to gulf on outgoing..
Crows Nets is literally just 100 yards to the south of where boat is parked... nice place!

Nice pics. That is what I bought mine for (DJI Phantom 3 Standard). However, I feel I need some more "Pilot Time" before flying over water. I joined a DJI drone forum and I can't believe how many guys lose their drones and how many end up in the water.

I insured mine with state farm for $60 a year. I have a mavic pro, which cost me about $1200. The policy will cover a complete loss from flyaway, sinking, etc. so I thought it was worth it.

yeah.. im nervooouuussss for sure.. decent pilot but sketchy landing on bow...
i plan on a DJI but admiral got this entry one for 199 so if it becomes a reef its not so tough to swallow..
...did not know you could insure.. that may step up my DJI P4Pro want! LOL

haha yeah the bow landing can be tough. I hand catch it a lot but its nerve racking for the Mavic since the blades are so close to my arm. I think this summer I'm going to make a little landing cradle that sits on the bow out of something soft. That way, if it comes down sideways it'll stop it sliding off the boat and worst case just shred a prop.

The bow on my Cobalt is flat....really flat but slick. Maybe a square of neoprene/wetsuit material out there would help.

might try some self adhesive non-slip shelving liner that is made from a soft foam product........just cut a piece from the roll and stick it to the deck while using the drone then remove the liner and discard it when finished flying the drone....usually the adhesive on the liner is fairly weak but should be strong enough to hold it in place on the deck.....might have to take a mild cleaner to remove residue from the adhesive....

I've been wanting a drone but I don't know where to start. I see entry-level anywhere from $100 all the way to the moon. I'm interested in something that allows me to spot tuna from above (need all the help I can get). But like you, I worry about it going to Davey's Locker. I wondered about securing some type of foam to keep it afloat should it hit the water. But then I don't know if it'll weigh it down too much and hinder its lift. Any thoughts??

your needing a fairly good model with flight time. the entry one i got is a Breeze 4k and can get for 199.. only 12 min of flight and better leave time to land on boat.. the flotation may be possible but would need a larger model to support the weight.. i would get a DJI Phantom 2 or 3 off ebay or craigslist and insure it for your use... get additional batteries for flight time.

For every bit of weight you add you cut your fly time down. People rig up extra batteries but you don't get a lot more flying time with the extra weight.

They have these emergency floats that operate like an inflatable pfd. The larger ones can carry the device no problem (mavic, phantom, etc)

The issue then is the drone itself is not waterproof and if you’re in the salt it will basically be useless.

I've had several smaller toy-type drones that took OK video but were really too small and light to fly well outdoors unless there was NO wind.

I was cruising Facebook Marketplace one day and found a guy selling a 1 year old DJI Phantom 3 Standard for $250. He had just bought a Mavik. The Phantom is a really good serious starter drone as it has about 25 minutes of flight time per battery, a true return-to-home function, GPS, etc. This drone weighs almost 3 lbs. and requires FAA registration (easy-no test) and is a dream to fly. The video quality is superb and there is a very robust DJI Drone Forum that has great help and support.

If you are going to buy one make sure you get one with GPS. When I launch mine the GPS keeps it rock steady. You can find them used on eBay or I say a new one yesterday at BestBuy for $399.

Nice shots!

They make a variety of different water float apparatuses for various drone models that seem to get good reviews on Amazon. I've never tried any, and might be an issue if you're in any sort of choppy seas I'd imagine. Personally I always catch mine in my hand for landing. Catch in one hand, use the remote in the other to shut it down. Takes a little practice on dry land, but pretty simple once you get the hang of it.

We are here tonight, can see where you had the drone flying.

First time in Venice, love this place. Very interesting, may come back next week. We wound up tied on the fuel dock.

Don't those drones use waterproof go pros?
