as I understand it is because the constant flexing of the hull and vibrations while running can tend to loosen connections if solid wire is used....stranded wire is more flexible....

All technical reasons aside; ABYC standards dictate this. So if a manufacturer wants the certification they need to follow this. Also surveyors would follow ABYC standards for the inspection and would site a solid wire as a major deficiency needing correction because of this.
