Hi folks,

I was wondering if someone could recommend a decent in dash depth sounder. I have a 2007 185 Sport that has a spot already drilled out for one, but it didn't have one installed when I purchased it. I've been shopping around on Amazon and was looking at the Faria Chesapeake stainless steal depth sounder with a in hull transducer. https://www.amazon.com/Faria-hull-Depth-Sounder-Transducer/dp/B001EYFN2Q

I really don't want to drill any holes in my hull or in the transom. Does anyone have any experience with in hull transducers? All I'm looking for is just something to monitor depth readings at low and high speeds. I want to try to keep it under $500 bucks. Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse, but I couldn't find any posts on this topic in the search section.

Thanks
Matt

I had a little round Lowrance installed on my 180 BR and it worked great.

I had the little pod that was installed on the transom and had no problems except if I ran over something and it would flip it up and stop reading. If you are doing the install just make sure to place it in a location where the trailer won't catch it..... or if you're in a marina dry storage, it has to be out of the way of the fork lift location.

The hole they made for the wire was above the water line a few inches with a little waterproof grommet and some sealant and never gave me any problems.

My current 290 DA has a little round Lorwance with a thru hull and it works great for being 20 years old. It just looks like the mount is glued in place in my bilge area and the transducer is fitted within. Also looks like an easy install.

Installing one on your 185 should be simple a weekend project.

Thanks little duck! I think I'm gonna go with the Lowrance LST-3800.

Drumbum....I have a brand new Hawkeye depth finder that will do what you are looking for. It does have a transom mount transducer but as you can see in the pics below it is really small and mounted on your transom will cause no problems for you. I'll have to look at the installation info but I think it can be mounted as a through-hull as well.

I'll sell it for $50.00 including shipping in the US. I bought it to go into a boat I'm restoring and then I bought a full gauge set that included a depth gauge so I don't need this one.

Let me know....
Shawn

Thanks for the offer Shawn, but I went with a Lowrance unit.

Shawn,

I’d be interested in the in dash unit if the cable is long enough for my 200OVOB. Was going to go with a chart plotter but the admiral shut that down.

That's a good deal. I have a similar Humminbird with transom mounted transducer. It was worked great for close to 10yrs now. About a year ago the transducer started oozing this black goo, especially when it is hot outside, but it still works. If your 185 is like mine, it has a liner, so a through hull transducer probably won't work.

I'll measure it and get back to you in a bit.

The Model# is actually DT1B but the specs are the same as above. http://www.hawkeyeelectronics.com/depthtrax/
I didn't untie the cable bundle to measure but it is easily 30' or longer. As I said, I bought this for my 1985 23' Cobalt project boat. I had every intention of using it but then found a deal on a full set of newer Faria gauges that I liked that included the matching depth gauge. All I had to do was buy the transducer.

I think I paid $90 for this Hawkeye unit but I'm trying to clean out some of the parts I don't need. And truthfully, I got such a smokin' deal on the new gauge set I can afford to pass a deal on to someone else. If someone wants it they can PM me with their details. Prefer payment through PayPal.

Thank
Shawn

That post is over 3 years old & the seller hasn't been on the forum in about a month. You may want to send him a DM to see if it's available.

I can confirm that NorCal Boater provided me with the depth sounder.
