in hull transducer, Sea Ray 480 MY

Does anyone have information on using a in hull transducer on a 2002 480 MY?
We just had a Garmin 7610 installed and found that there is no adapter for
the existing thru hull transducer.
I'm not wanting to haul the boat out for a while and was hoping to use a in hull for
a while and then when we haul out replace the thru hull and use the in hull as a second depth source.
Garmin says the max hull thickness for the in hull to operate is 5/8" and
Sea Ray says the hull is roughly 3/4"

I've never seen a transducer adapter and wouldn't use one if there was such an animal. Transducers and mounts are precisely made with an o-ring seal. To use an adapter means the adapter must exactly fit both the new transducer and the old transducer mount then there are 2 o-ring seals instead of one.

The shoot thru the hull transducers don't work very well on larger boats because the hull is quite thick. I don't think you would be happy with the results.

Just wait unit you haul out the next time and replace the entire transducer assembly with the thru hull Garmin transducer.
 
You can get some electrical putty ( the kind you use to seal the wires when they go into your meter box ) and put that between your thru hull and transducer if its a thru hull. It sticks to the hull and holds the transducer in place. Got it on my depth finder as my thru hull went bad and didn't want to pull boat. Its been stuck for two years now and works great. The instructions tell you to glue it down but then you have to make sure you don't have no air bubbles and I didn't want it permanent so the putty works great and when it gets in the way when I'm working on the motors I just pop it off move it out of the way and then restick it when Im done.

Before issuing a recommendation to stick a transducer in the bottom of a boat with putty, have you considered the difference in pressure on the transducer 10 " under water in you 5000 lb trailerable boat vs. the pressure on the transducer in a the bottom of 58,000 lb boat about 5 ft under water?

I don't know if using electrical putty will work or not but I highly doubt it. I wouldn't put a $350K vessel at risk to dave a $400 haul out fee and if I did, I would only do it in a haul out well with the slings already under the boat and the travel lift motor running.
 
you stick it inside the boat against the hull with putty!! No hole no pressure
 
What is the existing transducer? There is a good chance it can be made to work with the new Garmin....

For instance, the built in ducer on my 300da was a generic airmar 50/200khz, and works just fine with my new simrad - was a pain to find which wires to connect where, and the simrad had a menu to choose from.....

Thanks for your suggestions. The existing thru hull has a different freq. which the gps cannot recognize according to garmin..
We are going to try the in hull this week.I will post the results.

FYI, the in hull works great.
I will replace the thru hull the next time the boat is pulled out to take advantage of the garmins options. And
use the new in hull as a second source of depth.

Your thru-hull xdcr is probably an Airmar DT800 Smart transducer in a P17 retractable housing. If there are four wires (red, black, blue, and white) then it is a NMEA 0183 output 170 kHz transducer. If your new Garmin can use NEMA 0183 then it will work (Red +12VDC, Black -12VDC, White NMEA Hi, Blue NMEA Lo, shield ties to -12VDC)). Your Garmin will not care what frequency to drive the transducer as it is NMEA 0183 data only. If your Garmin needs NMEA 2000 then you will need a converter like the Actisense NGW-1.
