Cutting in cup holders in aft cockpit table

I just refinished my wooden table from my 310. I wanted to add cupholders somehow, but didn't want to screw up the table or interfere with the folding of the table. I had some grand ideas to embed super strong magnets in the base of the table and then attach the cupholders magnetically. It got kind of complicated and I sort of worried about what the magnets would do to people's watches or other magnetically sensitive items, so I punted. Still looking for a "temporary" cupholder concept that doesn't require altering the table.

Do a search for clamp on cup holders. When you stow the table, you can just remove them and stash them in a locker.

most cup holders are either plastic or stainless steel so magnets would not work to hold them I place....

Yes, but I was also planning on attaching neodymium magnets to can coozies or some kind of standalone cupholder so they would be attracted to the magnets. It's part of what made the whole thing too putzy.

Thanks for that. Downside to clamp-ons is that they stick out, making it hard to move around the table. What I have most recently considered is some kind of "bean bag" cupholder. I've seen a couple available like this.

At the end of the day, it's the admiral that gripes about this, not me. I have two cupholders at the helm. :)
 
If you don't glue the cupholders in place, you can just pop them back out of the holes when you're ready to store the table. If the hole in the table is very close to the OD of the cupholder, the cupholders will stay in place quite well when being used. If you don't mind cutting holes, that is.

Yeah, that occurred to me -- the stainless insert kind could just be popped out and its own weight + beverage would keep it in the table no problem.

It's really not a huge issue for me. The magnet concept occupied my thinking prior to refinishing the table, since if I was going to refinish it anyway, countersinking, epoxying and covering 4 neodymium magnets into the base of the table wouldn't be an issue. I blew that off and refinished the table, so now cutting holes is a kind of PITA and a lower priority.
 
we keep a couple of these bean bag holders sitting around and use as needed such as when we are on the bow....they work well....

Is that "The Beverage Bandit"? That's what comes up for me when I google beanbag cupholders. Is the outer fabric sunbrella? What's the interior material made out of, and does it open up so you could change it out or dry it?
 
it is the 'beverage bandit'......I don't think the fabric is sunbrella but it cleans up easily if something is spilled on it...it looks like it may be microsuede fabric...the cups are plastic and are not removable....they make a good seal to the body of the holder so no fluid can seep inside the holder....I have never soaked ours in the rain or dropped it in the water so I can't state how well it would dry out if it were soaked.....I doubt seriously if it would float so if it gets dropped in any deep water it would be a goner anyway.....:(....

That table looks different than the original one which fits under the hatch in the engine compartment. Did you make a new one or did searay have two versions?

We purchased the boat used, this is the table that came with it, So I'm not sure if it's original or not.
