You had it easy.

House Payment on your numbers in 1975: $320/month...adjusted $1507
House Payment on your numbers in 2017: $1742/month....

You're whining about $235/month on house payments?

I think you need to look at the homes themselves and not the price. In 1975 homes were not the palatial things they are today. My first town home was a small 2 bedroom place. My first single family home was a 900 sq ft 3 bedroom 1.5 bath ranch home. I was happy to buy it. It Worked for years and then we moved up to a 1700 sq ft 3 bedroom 2 bath 2 story with a basement. We didn't over buy on our house. The second house was no where close to $381K when we bought it and I wish it was worth that now. And my neighborhood ( good schools and desirable location has number of houses priced from less than 1/2 your figure to the mid 300's. Comfortable middle class homes.

Same with boats. I started with a 1987 Sea Ray 21' Monaco that I paid $5k for. Then moved up to a 340 Dancer and now a 2000 400 Sedan Bridge. Worked my way up to get the boat I wanted.

Society (not just Millenials) has changed to a "got to have it all now" mentality instead of getting what you can afford now and working upwards towards a bigger and better item.

Problem with many of the young adults today is they want the same lifestyle their parents now have including in some cases spacious homes, late model cars, boats, vacations, etc., but they don’t want to deal with what their parents had to deal with to get where they are.
They weren’t around when the parents were young and struggling while living in dumps and driving junkers that they spent more time under than in.

Ummm, I got news for you bud. If you only make 59,000 a year, you can't afford a 381,000 house. Buy a 75-100K starter house and work your way up like the rest of us did. I bought my first house in 96 or 97 for about 45K. It was a dump in a not so great part of town but it was all I could afford and I wanted to own and stop renting. I remodeled that house with a ton of sweat equity on less than 40K a year ( probably a lot less) and I was damn proud of the accomplishment. Oh, yeah, the whole time I was putting myself through college at night so I could get a better paying job. Mortgages were some 9% interest back then.

Take your petty whining elsewhere. No one in this thread gives two shits about your entitled whining. I'm trying to raise two teenagers now so they don't turn out like you. Hopefully I'm successful.

Fake news.

This article is interesting and provides some possible insight into the reasons that Brunswick may be selling only Sea Ray.

The article quotes from an SEC filing that says, "The sale was authorized, the company stated, “as a result of, among other things, a change in strategic direction and a review of the expected future cash flows, market conditions and business trends.

Looking at this from strictly a business standpoint, I think Sea Ray screwed up with their strategy by making the decision to go into the high-end market.

Looking at their lineup, they have 22 hulls and 40 different models. For one, that's way to many options. For another, they more or less abandoned the middle- to upper middle class consumer.

Look at the prices on the first 8 hulls...

SPX 190 - $36,700
SPX 210 - $43,800
SPX 230 - $54,000
SLX 230 - $76,800
SLX 230W - $113,100
SLX 250 - $107,800
SLX 280 - $139,600
SLX 310 - $229,300

Only 4 models under $100k, and because these are base MSRP, there are really only 3 under $75k because the SPX 230 will be pushing $75 when you spec it out.

Again, that's the first 8 hulls out of 40 total models. There's nothing here that's compelling for the middle class consumer. It's jumps from $75k to over $100k very quickly. Boats are "want to have", not "need to have" and there are a ton of companies, products and industries competing for our "want to have" disposable income.

Could not agree more!!!

It takes time to build your wealth and have nice toys. It's very gratifying when you can buy the nice things after you've struggled in the past. It builds strong character.

If you read the history of Brunswick its not like Boating is their only passion they have bought and sold companies from the beginning so just like Harley Davidson so is Sea Ray.The only question now will Sea Ray brand end up like Baja or will a Buyer come along and consolidate the models and make it profitable again. Seems to me like Brunswick has made some bad choices and like other things they have owned they're moving on.The Marine division lost their voice in the correct direction and the corporation took over and here they are selling it because of those choices don't take it personally its just business.

If you were to buy SeaRay what would you do to make the boats appeal to the potential buyers.
I would want space, heat that did not require the generator on. A stove that would not require a generator. Ventilation that would not require AC on all the time, a low voltage fan system that would cool by moving air without a lot of battery uses. Good view from the salon of the area you are anchored or moored at. And a price that would be less than the value of my house. Bet you could sell lots of boats if you could do this.

Northern, what a great post. This would be a good one for a separate thread on how to make SR a better boat. I have some ideas but will wait to see if you open up a new thread.
