Not sure of the specific terminology but he said something to the effect that he ran diagnostics on the different components and everything was checking out with the exception of a reported a failure of the #5 coil pack 2 out of 4 tests he ran. What that means I'm really not sure. I believe the test was being run while the engine was not running if that helps.

Not sure what equipment is needed for a stress test but the tech had a laptop, black box and cable hooked to the ECU.
 
The story continues.

Marina calls to say that Mercury has reviewed the data and requested some further details and pictures. Turns out that the cool fuel regulator has some paint delamination and is covered under a TSB. Mercury will provide the the regulator, fuel rail and injectors on both engines at no cost. I'm responsible for the labor which was quoted at $1,300.00.

They're also suggesting I replace the fuel pumps at the same time at $625.00 a piece even though there's no indication that the pumps have an issue. Doing the pumps at the same time will not incur any additional labor charges. However if I skip replacing them and then it turns out I need them it'll cost me an addition $400 labor total for both motors.

What do you guys think about the fuel pumps? I don't mind spending the money if I need to but don't particularly want to spend it just for grins either.

So does this negate the coil pack issue or does that still need to be addressed?

It's a lot of money if it does not solve the issue but if there is delamination evident then I would do it otherwise it will usually pop up under the worst conditions. It would kill me if I knew about it and put it off and it caused a problem on a trip. The parts for both engines would cost much more than the labor alone.

As far as the fuel pumps I would ask them why they are recommending they be replaced. I don't know about your model but it looks like the OEM pumps for my 8.1s with CF2 run about $300 online. I would run your serials through some online tools to get an idea of the cost. Then you could negotiate better on that cost.

I'm definitely doing the regulator and injector part of the quote. The only thing I'm questioning is the additional fuel pumps

i wouldnt do the pumps.....they are "before" the point at which the cover delaminates....that is the problem....the flaking cover is after the pumps and the filters.....it clogs the attached regulator (the one on the fuel rail is a "dummy") and in extreme cases it continues up the rail and into the injectors - really has nothing to do with the lift or high pressure pumps.....
 
How difficult is it to swap that #5 coil with one on the other motor and go for a test ride?

I need to get online and check that out. Hard for me to get to the boat though as it's 75 miles away and a busy time of year.

BTW, this brings up something funny I heard. I was working with the technician and explaining all the work I'd done including the injectors. I told him I had no clue what I was doing but learned online. He said "ah, I see, you're YouTube certified!". That cracked me up so now I've added it to my signature below :)
 
I bought my set of fuel pumps (high pressure and low pressure) for one engine for $500 couple years back from an online mercury distributor. Part numbers were.

You'd have to validate part numbers for your S/N's engines....
