i believe a good portion of the members on CSR are men over age 50 so I thought I would post some good news from a personal standpoint that they can identify with and possibly be encouraged by.....

in November 2012 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer....during my routine yearly physicals we noticed my PSA count was rising quickly over a two year period but the count never went over 4 which is considered to be normal....but the 'velocity' of the PSA rise was enough to get my general Dr. concerned so I had a biopsy done....it showed early stage 3 cancer with a gleason score of 6 (3+3)....I was not having any symptoms and have no family history of prostate cancer and no lump was felt so as you can imagine this came as a shock to me....

I had robotic surgery done in January 2013 to remove my prostate....the prostate was examined and there were positive margins where it was possible that some of the cancer cells were outside of the gland....pretty disheartening news to say the least....

but I have had many follow-up visits with the surgeon and many PSA test performed and I am very lucky to be able to report that the PSA test show 'undetectable' levels of PSA for 5 years.....

so technically I have 'beaten' prostate cancer but there is always a chance it could return...

I just thought I would post this personal story to encourage any other members that may be battling this problem or know someone that is and let you know there is hope even if things don't look great at first....

you just have to keep the faith....

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving Holiday....I know mine will have special meaning this year....

Congrats Cliff...That's one battle you hope you never have to fight. Happy Thanksgiving to you too.

That's great news, Cliff. Life is precious.

My hats off to you Cliff and congrats

Congratulations. Puts everything else in perspective on this Thanksgiving holiday.

Awesome Cliff!
The story is appreciated. I hit 50 in about 4 months.

Good news Cliff - I had no idea. I do understand the watching though - there is a history of prostate cancer and cancer in general in my family. I've been getting probed pretty regularly for years.

Guys, get those physicals (glove and all) and don't ignore your Dr. when they start talking about colonoscopies - I've had 3 so far, they really aren't that bad - and definitely a lot better than the conditions they are trying to detect early..

Congrats Cliff!

I am working on becoming a "survivor" myself after my routine colonoscopy detected rectal cancer. I have had one round of chemo/radiation and had the tumor surgically removed. I am about to start a final round of chemo. I cannot wait to be declared "cancer free"!

And now I can honestly say "that I no longer a perfect a$$hole"...

Lol

Lol

But you can say you are working hard to getting back to perfect a$$hole status!

Best of luck Steve - along with thoughts and prayers.

That’s great news! I’m still battling the big C myself after being diagnosed in December of 13 with a tumor in my stomach I had it removed on New Year’s Eve that year. There is still another one in there that is too small to go after, but regular scans and the cancer drug that my Oncologiat has me on seems to be keeping everything at bay nearly 4 years later.

Excellent news and very happy for you! I have my yearly check ups and so far, so good. My wife is a cancer survivor and is 6.5 years cancer free, though she will take a pill for the rest of her life. As was stated earlier...we are not guaranteed tomorrow.

Good job on beating the Big C Cliff. My dad had prostate cancer and at his age (90's) they told him they wouldn't do anything about it. But I get probed every year at my physical and have had 3 colonoscopies. Not fun but the worst part is the junk they make you drink to clean you out.

The doc told me when I started drinking it not to leave the house. Boy, was that ever an understatement. I was afraid to get off the can.

It's worth it though. So far, so good.

Great to hear Cliff. My brother is a survivor. I get checked every 6 mos and have had 2 rounds of butt pics. And yes the prep is the worst part.

lost my oldest sister at 56 with Colorectal Cancer that was found to late in 2006. I have a 37 year old nephew whom was found to have stage four colorectal cancer three years ago and The Nashville hospital sent him to Duke medical center as there are supposed to be one of the tops in this country for such. He know lives in California and has check ups every three months and so far is clean.

I hit 63 next month and have a colonoscopy every five years as it’s in our family genes. My children as well as all nieces & nephews were advised to start the process at thirty years old now because of the fam8ly history. Fortunately nothing showing up anywhere but we all need to stay on top of it as I lost a doc mate last year to prostrate cancer way to young.

I’ve done the great loop, headed back to KW this winter till April and enjoying life better than I deserve as tomorrow may never come for some of us. Live life to the best of your ability as it is a prescious gift taken away far to soon for many. Wishing all a very Happy Thankdgiving and let’s go boating !

My sentiments exactly! That is why I decided to quit waiting until I retired and bought my 400 Sedan Bridge now. I am planning on doing the Great Loop also.
Do you stay on the water in KW? If so where?

Steve

Congrats to you guys beating up on the big C.

My brother didn't do as well, he died at 56 from a melanoma. He never knew he had a problem until it was too late.

Given how we all like to spend our time(and money) boating don't forget sun exposure. It was something I hadn't given much thought until then.
