Official 280 Sundancer Thread

A different take on the microwave ( I found one but its 1/2" too high). Has anyone taken the face frame off of the cabinet so they could more easily insert a microwave?

Question for those with the 4.3 alpha set up. When reversing in my "new to me" 2004 280, the port drive takes more shifter travel to engage reverse. When I move both shifters together, the starboard will engage reverse first while the port will "skip" until given a touch more movement on the shifter (maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch). Based on what I've read, the symptoms seem to indicate that I need to adjust the shift cable on the port side to better match the starboard side. I'm curious if this is "normal behavior" or whether others are perfectly in-line between port and starboard shifters.

Mine is in line, but again, it's new to me as well. I don't know if the PO did any kind of cable alignment.

Thanks for the reply, if yours in "in-line" then at least I know that's something that's attainable. Has anyone on the thread done this job themselves, or is this something better left to the service dept to get lined up right?

Prior to buying this 2005 280 I looked at a couple of others. They all (including the one I bought) had stains in the carpet (rust type) on the starboard side adjacent to the head and stairs. Does anyone else have this staining and do you know the cause?

Location of Glomax gain amplifier: Does anyone know where it's located on a 280 DA? I'm replacing the antenna which I got from Glomex (at no charge) and it has an automatic one (gain amplifier) so I have to replace it.

It's in the little compartment above the sink. Slide those doors open and it's screwed to the wall on the right side.

Can anyone tell me what the 'strap' on the portside forward deck is for?

I believe it's intended to secure the center window if you have it open while under way.

I always wanna know what is that for!!!! Problem is that I also have one of those straps on the starboard side as well. That can not be for secure the centre windshield!!! Any ideas?

This is certainly - a great thread for 'new to me' 280's. A few more questions:

The helm seat (which moves up and down) rocks a bit - it's almost like there is a missing spacer or bushing between the telescoping shaft and the base shaft. Does anyone know if that spacer exists.

The halon system (05 280) while in the green is close to the red mark. The surveyor pointed this out. I believe this is the 'original' halon system. As anyone updated or had the system refilled?

I had looked at a three 280's before I decided on this one. All of the had staining (rust?) in the main cabin adjacent to the fridge/head. Is this caused by a water leak from either?

Has anyone upgraded the original Raymarine radio (believe it's a #215) if so what did you put in its place. It looks to be a totally different shape than the newer radio - SH or ICOM out there.

I'm sure I'll have many more questions - especially on the operation of the boat - so thanks in advance everyone.

Helm seat - There is a bushing. Assuming its still there a little play is normal.

Halon - True Halon is no longer commercially available. You can find a company to use reclaimed Halon, but I would recommend just making sure you have newer fire extinguishers handy. I have one mounted under the helm seat, and another on the inside of the starboard cockpit sink hatch.

Leak - If you leave the starboard port light open, or the dogs aren't tight, water drips through and gets behind the cabinetry, eventually making its way down to the carpet between the companionway stairs and head door. An additional source of leaks is the fridge, the freezer tray frost will melt if the fridge is off and the meltwater will leak out of the fridge, settling on the carpet.

Ray 215 - Slightly enlarging the hole, I installed a Standard Horizon Quantum 5500, a terrific radio especially if you add the Command Mic option. To all that keep asking, the 215 and the E64019 handset were sold several years ago. Thanks

Could be to secure the VHF antenna when it's in the folded position.

Garelick makes the seat base - and the bushing - in case it's missing.

So going through the survey today the guy found two water leaks in the 'aft cabin'. One adjacent to the forward bulkhead - but that one looks like a drain replacement. The second is along the starboard aft bulkhead and appears to be coming from the cockpit. The owner has agreed to have the dealer fix but curious if anyone else has had this problem and the source. Oh and this is on a 2005 280.

My starboard mid berth leak was from the drain hose from the companionway well drain. The hose was leaking and water pooled under that corner.

Has anyone recently replaced the microwave on their 280? I saw posts from several years ago about the topic but curious if anyone has done it recently and if so the brand and model would be appreciated.

This is from my post on CSR's general discussion thread

So after expending a lot of time looking (and measuring) at different microwave brands in stores I ended up buying a Magic Chef .07 Cu ft. microwave at Home Depot. It is slightly over 10". Every other brand is about 10.2' or larger. It seems like most of these brands are identical except for the face and the brand name. I'm going to use a belt sander to trim the bottom of the face frame (I only have about a 1/16" of an inch of room here. Then will (using the belt sander) trim up the top just enough to place the microwave I only need a total of about 1/8 total to make it fit. Oh and as fyi don't believe many of the measurements provided by the manufacturers or stores. The worst one was Bella microwave at Best Buy. They had the height at approximately 9.5" and the bella manufacturers site had over 10".

I'm having problems with my battery charger. Xantrex TrueCharge2 20a. Its not charging my batteries. When I looked, the wires from the charger are not going to the 3 batteries. Where are they going??? How do I troubleshoot this issue? Sorry if out of topic, but I could not find where to post this.

Attached is the install manual for the unit which might be helpful. http://www.xantrex.com/documents/Ba...rge2 Install Guide (975-0402-01-01_Rev-B).pdf

If the unit was functional before and not charging now I'd start with 2 things - check the fuses (if on the unit) and 2. put a voltmeter the incoming A/C current to ensure it's getting juice, they switching the voltmeter put it on the outgoing leads to the battery. I also assume that you check the leads to make sure they were tight and there was no corrosion at either the unit or on the battery terminals. If still not functioning I'd call Xantrex ( they'll probably ask you if you did check for power in and power out).

I took a picture of the unit. It is getting power. Not sure why the percentage of charge is so low if the batteries are weAK.

Did you check the battery terminals to ensure clean and tight connections? Looks like on the face of the unit you have corrosion so that might be the case at the leads or the battery terminals). I assume the batteries were good before you had this problem? The voltmeter is your friend, I put it on the battery with the charger being on. If you're getting juice at the battery then it could be the batteries. If not, either corrosion at the unit terminals or the charger is toast (if no fuse or breaker on unit). FYI if you're getting full voltage to the batteries with the unit on but the batteries did not charge - then the batteries are toast. Again the voltmeter is your friend it's the best $10-15. investment you can make

I'll get a volt meter. Just bought the boat this summer and put new batteries on. Now I realize with the new batteries the charger isn't keeping them charged. Need to find out where the wires from the charger are going because they are not connected to the battery.
