Official 2003.5-2008 340 Sundancer Thread

I think you are referring to the Cool Fuel Gen3 issues on 8.1s beginning in 2005. I don't believe it's an official recall but I do know of Merc replacing them on a case by case basis. I was also told you had to go through a Merc authorized repair facility.

Thanks for the response. What exactly is a "cool fuel gen3?

Have been looking at 06/07' 340's, and ran across one that the engine was rebuilt, and fuel tanks changed due to this problem.

Is it a prevalent issue, and how does one know if a particular boat could develop this problem? Is it something a surveyor will be able to identify?

What exactly is a "cool fuel gen3?

It's Merc's evolution into an integrated fuel cooler, pumps and fuel filter. It integrated the systems around the spin on fuel separating filter and introduced a cartridge filter as a replacement.

I am not sure why this problem would be related to having the engines rebuilt and the tanks replaced. Any problem here would be between the tanks and the engine. Generally if the delamination of the CF3 occurred the paint particles flow foward toward the engine and would clog the fuel rails or injectors. I would think if they past through the injectors they would have been small enough to be blown out during the exhaust stroke.

If all that was done on the boat I would think there is a lot more story to the boat that is not being revealed.

More info on the problem:

The whole rebuild, replace tanks on that boat ended my interest.....

Interesting. I looked at your link, and it says:

"All inboard 8.1 models equipped with Gen III cool fuel 1A380210 and below"

Not sure if the number above is for a specific part, it seems to be. The boat I'm in the process of purchasing - waiting on the survey - has these 8.1 inboard engine numbers:
-OW393911 and OW393916

How does one find out about the "1A380210 and below" referenced above? Is that in reference to the fuel cooler? Can one see this to determine its number and see if the above is applicable.

Apologize for the probably ignorant questions, but also want to be informed on what I'm buying when laying out 6 figures cash.

Does anyone know where the DSM300 might be mounted on a 2006? My cable disappears into the side hole behind the dash.

Answering my own question, in case someone else comes looking some day. In the cockpit, to the righ of the helm, where the speaker and cupholders are. Take that out, behind is a treasure trove of Autopilot computer, DSM300, Autopilot pump, etc.

They sound in the similar range as my serial numbers - mine are 2006. I have not had any probs with mine - although I had one module changed out due to corrosion at the raw water fittings on the module. It's my observation from forum posts that the cool fuel paint issue surfaces when you use ethanol laden fuel which we don't have in my neck of the woods in Oz.

Thanks Guys, working being done tomorrow went with the Axiom 9, Q24W 18" Dome. Raymarine is offering $500 rebates for both units through December. I will send a pic when complete.
I am new to this forum and just purchased a 2006 340. I have already gotten a lot of info just by reading the last couple of years posts(thanks to all contributors). I have looked at all of the options for replacing all electronics. Going with the Raymarine Axiom (one 9” and one 12” display), EV 140 autopilot, Quantum CHIRP Pulse Compression Radar, Sirius weather satellite receiver, topped off with a ICOM VHF with AIS Receiver. Should be completely installed next week. My only question is - will I need to have two backbones (Seatalk and NMEA 2000) to get full integration with All above and SmartCraft gauges to overlay on the displays?

From what I have learned SeaTalkng is Raymarine's implementation of N2K. Smartcraft is not N2K compatible (its Mercuisers proprietary implementation of CANBUS) and you will need a gateway to bridge from Smartcraft to N2K and to connect you will need a Raymarine connection from SeaTalk to N2K.

Check your mounting points; the 12" and 9" combo may be too large to fit in the current areas without building outside.

-Kevin
Actually you are correct. The 12” display will have to mounted in the space above the steering wheel, but not recessed. I will use the mounting bracket (allows the display to tilt) as a surface mount.

When I spoke with Raymarine,my understanding was, the Axiom has both Seatalk and N2K inputs and is capable of running both at the same time seamlessly. I am not sure of this yet. I hope I don’t have to gateway or convert. As I understand the converter/gateway is not a reliable solution.
But you bring up a good point about converting the Smartcraft language to N2K. Do you think it will require an N2K backbone to run the components that are not “Seatalk” compatible (VHF and AIS included)? Or is it even possible to overlay the data from those components?

Has anyone replaced the Air Conditioner. My unit (on 2006 340) does not seem like it will keep up with the South Florida heat during the summer. I was advised by the AC Technician it is working properly, but at its limit now (70 degrees w/ outside temp of 80) and beyond capacity in the summer. It is a 12,000 BTU (OEM) unit. It also will not keep the humidity below 70%. My wife and I plan on staying on the boat for a week or two every couple of months, and would like to keep it around 76 degrees in the middle of the day while docked or anchored.
Has anyone upgraded to a 16,500 BTU, what were the results?

I have not had any issues with the stock AC keeping the humidy and temp low (70 deg) in the middle of the summer when it is high humidity and temps are in the low 90s here in MA. I think there is something wrong with your unit.

I have replaced mine with a 16,000 btu. We live in AZ and it is so much better! You will not be disappointed!

What I learned from my research is that the units have N2K but the Axiom accessories are SeaTalk (which is Raymarines N2K cabling). So you need to either build a N2K backbone and adapt SeaTalk devices or build a SeaTalk and adapt N2K devices. Since you mentioned you are adding autopilot, sirius, etc it sounds like you would want a SeaTalk backbone and just get the N2K adapter for the Gateway.

Lots of good info here:

Thanks Kevin. VERY HELPFUL. I will let you know how it goes.

Question -

The mirror on the back wall in the aft cabin, the large mirror - how difficult is that to replace?

Need a little assistance. Went aboard this evening to nose around a bit and found a little bit more water in the bilge than I like. (ok, I like zero, but never seems to be the case). Tried to turn on the bilge pumps, and the light on the dash would not come on. All others were fine, just the bilge pump. It worked fine two days ago. Just trying to see if there is anything simple before I run down a rathole. I checked the circuit breaker on teh forward panel in the engine bay. Anything else?

Breaker? (probably obvious). My first place to look. Sorry a bit of “the blind leading the blind”
